Post Original Factory Seat Restoration?

Has anyone had their original factory bench seat rebuilt with new (Or better, modern) springs, foam and apolstry? If so, please tell me what type of place to look. An apolstry shop? Or some other type of place. I'm not interested in specific places across the country, because I don't want to ship it. Also what should a guy expect to spend?
Thanks!
Darren

I picked up a long sheet of vinyl for $40 at local arts/crafts/apolstry shop... Took a class at local tech school during summer and learned how to apolster my own seat. Was really fun, learned alot, and came out with a nice looking/cheap bench seat. any broken springs were carefully tack welded back together. Parts seemed to loose some of the spring, but I guess you have to expect that when you heat it up like that. Oh yeah, foam was cheap too. Hope this helps...

I have seat covers made up from the factory patterns. Then you can put them on yourself & save $$$. A new bottom foam cushion or pad over the original really improves the ride. If you are ever down in Olympia, I can show you some of these covers & completed seats. I also have matching door panel covers & dash pad covers. These are nice quality interiors that are very reasonable, if you will do the installation your self.

Question

While we are on this subject bench seat that has a depression on the drivers side from the driver would this be loose springs, torn worn out padding or combo of both??

Re. question of depression on drivers side---after parting out several trucks, the common problem is springs breaking that support the side of the bench seat. Many are just worn, rusted and lose their tensel(sp) strength. Sometimes it's much better to just upgrade to a newer truck or car seat as there are plenty available in the recycle yards at a cost of less then a good repair/rebuild job. New original pattern covers can be had for $200+ which really isn't bad considering, but limited to a few color choices. Good luck-Huck.

I purchased a set of houndstooth original design bench seat covers from Jim Carter. They were not cheap ($245) but the quality is excellent and they are identical to the original covers. They have the houndstooth covers in 14 different color combinations.

I took the seat to a local upholstery shop.
They replaced the broken springs and put on the seat covers for $65. I can't believe the difference replacing the springs made. Before, I felt like I was falling out of the door, but now the seat is nice and firm.

I have pictures but haven't had a chance to download them from my camera.

I guess is what I'm asking is, Is it normal for most (average) apolstry shops to be able to upgrade / rebuild the springs in the seat? Or is this somthing I should look at a diffrent type of shop for?

Looks like johnnyp had your answer.... a reputable upholstery shop should be able to replace springs, foam, and put on a seat cover in whatever color and style you want. Ask around and find a good one in your area...
