73-87 crew cabs?

I really like the crew cabs. I got a friend whose selling me a 70? Crew cab 4x4 with an awesome 454 its a long bed. Now my question is can i put this body on a 85 chevy 4x4 long bed frame? I would also like for the truck to be a short bed. Any info on a transformation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Something like the pic.

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

Thanks There used to be a crew cab short bed 85 running around here in Des Moines. It was pretty cool. Also, my brother has a 88 V30 crew cab that has a 5.9 cummins in it. It is going to get recabbed and repainted this winter, hopefully. For your question, I think you might have to lengthen the frame a bit or off set it by trimming the front of the box to make up for the short wheel base. We built a crew cab truck using a crew cab 2wd and used a burban frame. We had to lengthen it, I think, 4 inches if I remember correctly.

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

Can i make my friends 78 crew cab 2wd into a 4x4? How hard is it to take all of the 2wd front components off and put a leaf spring set up on it? I want to jerk all that stuff and make it a 4x4.

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

Not hard really. I jerked off all the old 2x4 stuff in a few hours. It all unbolts. I got a donor truck and robbed the shackles, front leaf spring mounts, engine crossmember, and steering box. On this crew cab truck, I used a 4"x4" 1/4" piece of square tubing and welded the front spring hangers to it. Then I measured where it needed to be from the donor truck. I also measured the shackle hole location and cut a hole in the side of the frame and drilled 4 holes for the shackle. I bolted the shackles on, installed my new leaf springs, and then bolted the front axle under it. I had to drill some new holes for the engine crossmember but it wasn't that bad. Then I swapped out the 2x4 steering box for the 4x4 unit. There might be a little more to it but that is the jist of it.

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

Well i talked to my bud today and got sum info. Its a 79 crew cab w/ a new 454 blue printed and balanced. Needs some body work but doable. He only wants $1,000. He's a good guy and he also has two carbs to go with it. The truck runs sweet. So it looks like im gonna be sleeping in the couch some time soon. Cause da wife aint gonna like another toy in the yard.. Dieselwrencher thanks for all the info, and tomany toys thanks for the pics. Now i got to go wipe off the drule. Thanx

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

On my truck I chose to replace the spring hangers with 4wd ones because the 2wd front rear spring hangers are shorter and would require a bigger lift spring than you would need if you just swapped the hangers to 4wd style. Then I did a shackle flip and I only had a 4" block on the rear when the truck had 10" of lift. So basically you could have a 10" lift on the rear for some labor, a 4" block, and the price of u-bolts and 4wd hangers. My truck came with 56" heavy duty springs on the rear so if yours aren't as beefy actual lift heights may differ.

Re: 73-87 crew cabs?

I used ojoe's Method of Combining the Rear Half of a 1/2 Stepper Frame to the 3/4 Ton Crew Cab Frame. Look up Member ojoe & He has a Pretty Detailed Write-up of How to do it..............

Not Sure that I would either, That was not the Intent behind the Build. Can't beat a Stock Truck if Hauling is your Priority.................
