The motor should be coming home this week. Horsepower is expected to be 350-400. It was reeeaaaalllllyyyyyyy tired and needed more attention than we first thought. It did get some cool go fast parts though. I'll post a list of the upgrades after I get it from the builder.

I know I'm lagging on pics but I still have to figure out how to reduce their size for the forum.
I have a new question though. Where can I find a power steering pressure hose for a 69 burb with a 396? No one seems to carry one for the big block. Any ideas or suggestions? Hose Pros might be able to make one but it will be a minimum of $60 and they need to reuse the metal ends from the old one. (sixty bucks to replace the hose in the middle????)

Order the hose for a 73 chevy 1 ton with a 454. That is what I did for mine.

I checked out the hose for a 73 1ton w/454 but it was not the same. The ends (fittings) were different. Any other suggestions? Has anybody else come across this problem? If so, what did you do?

What about swaping out to a 73 model pump as well, then the fittings will be right, it may be easier and cheaper than getting the right hoses, and then they will be more readily available.

So the motor is finally in. We still have to finish all the detail stuff, but at least it is in the burb. It should be up and running this weekend (shhhwiiiiinnngggg). I ended up having a hose made for $80 (ouch). All they did was use my ends and just replaced the hose in the middle! It appears that my ps pump has an external reservoir rather than integral one. For whatever reason, the hoses are different because of that. Oh well, it's done now. I will post a link to pictures as soon as I get them off the camera and online.

I would've thought any 67-72 chevy truck with a BBC and PS would have worked as far as donating a PS hose? BTW I have aBBC out of one of our years, and it has the seperate resivour as well. I think pickmupman had some made with stainless steel lines and he was selling them for about $100 each, so maybe they are discountinued??

Ya you would think the hose would be the same, but noooooooooo... I picked some Earl's hose parts yesterday for the carb to fuel pump run and realized I could have made my own hose out of braided hose. That would have been sweet, too late now though.
I have pictures, I swear. I just need to upload them to an online album. Working days, teaching two nights a week and part-time on other stuff doesn't leave me a lot of free time for the fun stuff. Oh yeah, gotta spend time with the wife too.

Okay, so the burb is up and running now. Only problem is that the Edelbrock Performer 800 on there seems too small and is not flowing enough as it doesn't have the pickup expected. I ordered a Holley 770 that flows more than the Edelbrock per my buddy/mechanics suggestion. It should be delivered today or tomorrow. Has anybody had any issues with too small a carb on the 396? We also had a problem with the HEI. It had vacuum all the time at the carb. The vacuum line is currently plugged. Any thoughts?
BTW, how do you like the way the motor turned out?

A relatively stock (stock unported heads) 396 or 402 assuming you went .030 over wont need anything larger than a 750 cfm carb....now if you ported the heads or snuck some aftermarket heads on it then you might need to step up a little, but carbs need to be the right size for real power....too big is as bad as to small. Just my opinion

Thats what i'm doing to mine 2005 6.0 with the el80 tranny should be awesome an older ride looks sik with a newer engine just my opinion CAN'T wait til i can cruise it again

Ok so I know I am probably a day late and a dollar short but I just came across this thread and wanted to say the engine looks good has a kind of sleeper look to it but for the carb I have a 1971 402 BB and am running stock intake with a 396 375hp cam and hydraulic lifters with a 1406 Edelbrock carb which is only a 600 cfm and it hauls just fine I almost feel like my carb is too big sometimes but the old hot rodders formula suggests about a 600 cfm.

When I first bought my Pink and White 72 LB in 2001 I was going around to engine rebuilders trying to find out the specs on the 396 that is still in truck. One of the rebuilders found the number( 3902406 ) on the block and told me it was a 1967 396 block.. He then tried very hard to convince me into swapping my 396 for a rebuilt 402 he had sitting there and he'd do the swap for free. I guess he , a local reputable builder, figured the 396 was worth something. One of theses days I'll pull a valve cover to get the head casting numbers so I can tell exactly which 396 I have.
