Question 71 GMC I'm looking at buying, Questions

I'm looking at a 71 GMC Grande Sierra thats in pretty good condition. (just a BUNCH of little stuff missing/damaged) I have two questions that are concerning me,
1. The VIN plate on the door sill is gone. The VIN # in the glove box matches a sticker on the inside of the door, I couldn't see/find the frame stamp. Is this going to be an issue for me down the road?
2. The glove box data sheet shows "Cheyenne Super Package", is this typical for GMC's?
Thanks in advance, Mike

I'd be a little worried about that missing V.I.N #, why would someone take it off? I wonder if there is another truck running around somewhere using that # for registration. Maybe have your local D.M.V. do a title search. Don't know about your other question, just my .02 worth.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that "Cheyenne" was a Chevy only designation, even on the glove box labels.

Other than Custom and Super Custom, GMC had Sierra and Sierra Grande packages.

Regarding the glove box option wording, I believe GMC's used same option codes as Chevy to denote their options even though they were marketed as Cheyenne Super and Sierra Grande. Therefore it would stand to reason that the description associated with the option # would not vary on the production line as GMC and Chevy's were built on same production lines.

I believe your glovebox is correct. The missing VIN tag makes me suspect about the trucks history.

GMC did use the same options codes and names. Here one from a 72 GMC Jimmy designated Cheyenne

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there should be a VIN stamped into the frame close to the power steering box. I'd check that against the sticker and the glovebox. If it matches, I wouldn't wory about it. If it's like my local DMV, You'll have to show them where to look for the VIN anyway.

I too would worry about the missing tag. I got Tennessee antique plates for my truck. There is a form that needs to be signed by a law enforcement official, and he/she is obligated to do a visual vehicle inspection that includes checking correct numbers.

You can just send the title to Nashville, and get regular plates if you live in a county that does not perform smog and safety checks. You would be okay, unless you were in an accident, and the cop checked for vin information, then you might lose the truck and have to answer to a higher authority.

Be very carefull about deciding to buy that truck, unless the owner is willing to go with you to a State Patrol office, and the truck could be inspected and issued a new vin number, that is a sticker with bar code installed by the State Patrol.

I don't think you can even junk a vehicle in Tennessee without a vin tag. Some junk yards will accept a vehicle without a title, but not with a missing tag.

OK, I stand corrected. Mine just has the Custom package listed on the glove box but it's a '68.
