line in converter directly to amp???

Im far from actually doing anything stereo wise in my truck but I was just planning out and thinking what I might want. I got to thinking how much I really use a cd player or radio, which isn't much at all. Im my daily driver, the factory head unit has a auxiliary input which I plug my MP3 player into, and thats all I ever use. So my question is, to keep stuff clean and keep from having crap Ill never use, is there such thing as a line in/aux input converter that has 4 speaker outputs that can be wired directly to a 4 channel amp. I picked up a monsoon amp out of a GM car at the local yard. This way there would be no head unit, just a headphone jack either on or hidden under the dash somewhere that I plug my MP3 player into.

Yes, you CAN do it. No, I WOULDN'T do it. The output signal from anything like an iPod or Walkman is going to be super low voltage. It might not be enough to do much with as far as the amp is concerned. Most amps like a 4-8v signal.

Additionally, there are safety concerns. You have to keep your eyes on the unit when changing songs, getting the correct volume, etc.

Well I was wondering if there was a device that would up the signal. Basically something that has a input (like a headphone jack or rca jack) and a 4 speaker outputs that I could connect to the amp.

I was looking at some PAC audio stuff and some of their products looks like it could be adapted. I will have to look into it some more.

I would question the output voltage on that PAC device. Doesn't look like much more than a "mysterious black box."

Are you just wanting to hook your ipod up to an amp and use the amp to power you speakers? I just did this in my 71 GMC. Install two speaker boxes and am and then I plug my ipod into the amp. I just bought a (red white) rca to headphone jack cable and plugged it into the rca on the amp. Works great actually and in total it cost me less than the price of a head unit that is Ipod compatible. I hid the amp and everything under the seat so the only thing you see is the headphone jack coming out from under the seat. If you have anymore questions just ask.

I would think so. Don't all amps have the RCA inputs? When I bought this setup the guy that helped me set it up said that if it didn't get loud enough (which it does) I could put an inline volume amplifier (don't know the exact term) in between my ipod and the amp.

They had two pickup speaker boxes with 8" speakers and some tweeters for $50 for the set brand new. Then I bought a used (it what a display model) 300 watt amp and all the wire and connectors to hook it up. In the end I paid $150 with I thought was cheap.

Also just in case I didn't say it, you don't even need a radio. I didn't want to cut my dash or put a deck in the glove box. So a friend that works at an audio store suggested this setup to me.

You didn't mention which brand of MP3 player you have, but I plan on doing the same thing with my Zune and this:

It's worked well in my other vehicle. I do NOT like messing with volume, song selection, etc while driving, so I'll probably end up with the remote control as well.

Well I'm going to jump start this thread a bit.

Working on my project and started thinking of this again. I forgot about this thread and didn't check it since I last posted. Anyways I'm working on smoothing the dash in my 52 and don't want to cut the dash to install a head unit.

So by the sounds of it I should just be able to plug my Zune into the rca inputs on whatever amp I decide to go with?

I also found this http://www.electronickits.com/kit/co.../ampl/k100.htm So basically I wire the outputs from this to the inputs on the amp and plug my zune directly into this. It will also allow for more control as it has volume, bass, tremble and balance control. For $23 I may just try it out.

some amps have ajustable gain(imput vol) this would help bring up the line level,just watch it's not clipping/distorting.
