ive got a starter question

i have a 72 cheyenne 4x4,the motor is a 70 i believe. my starter solenoid went out,not thinking i went and got a new starter instead of just a solenoid.the starter has three bolts, two on the face and one that comes in from behind through the bell housing.simple enough...well the starter i got from napa seemed to be identical till i went to put it in.one of the bolt holes was about 1/4 inch off. i drilled it out , but once installed i gave the key a turn, grind! i took the spacer out,no luck. my question is do they make different starters for auto and manual trans? the guy at napa said no.not sure if i believe him though.my core is already gone, too.how and where do i find the starter i need?

Re: ive got a starter question

There is a huge difference between manual and auto starters. Manuals bolt to the bellhouse and autos bolt to the block....Dont even look the same.

Curious, but you shouldnt have had to drill anything. Need some pics.

Re: ive got a starter question

I have found that the reman 3 bolt manual starters sold at NAPA have new nose cones on them that are too thick. They hit the inside of the cast bellhousing which prevents the starter from seating correctly. If you still have your old starter compare them side by side paying attention to the noses. The reman nose is thicker.
