Question setting the timing

i have set the timing 10 times already - can somebody tell me what the problem is? i have had to pull the front of the motor back off (a motor that i have just built - 2 hrs max) the timing marks on the timing gears are aligned but the distributor is pointed towards the passenger's door - when number one piston is up, the distributor is pointing toward number but the timing marks are not together - the crank gear is at 12 o'clock and the cam gear is at 12 o'clock - is it a half turn out of timing? when one is up and the distributor is pointing at one do the timing points on the gears need to be the crank gear at 12 o'clock and the cam gear at 6 o"clock? please help me - it will run but with a great miss - it won't pull a hill but will idle decent - i am planning on taking it to a show in NC on Thursday so anyone can help please do!! thanks, Brent

Brent,
It sounds like you are setting your timing when your number six piston. The timing marks on your crank and cam should line up, cam mark shoud be at 6 o'clock and the mark on the crank shoud be on 12 o'clock. Piston number one and six are in top dead center when you line up the timing marks. Just remember to position the distributor pointing to the number one piston. When you say it is pointing towards the passanger side, then it is pointing to the number six piston. You might bring the number one piston to top dead center, but; since the number six piston is also in top dead center, you might have it 180 degrees off. Crank it one more revolution untill the timing marks line up. If you position the distributor right and it still back fires, then you might need to advance the timing or decrease the timing. You need to find out what is the best timing for the cam you are using. Some cams need to be around 10-12 degrees after top dead center. You could find out by calling the cam's manufacture. they would usually help you.
Well, I hope this information helps.
