If you have a stock rear end now and dont know how to set the backlash yourself and have to take it to a shop, it would be cheaper to find a used rear and swap the whole thing out.

Re: HELP! identify the scatterd pieces

Get a whole new rear from the junkyard. itll take pulling the covers off a few to find the one you want that isnt damaged and/or has the ratio you want. i got my last one for approx $45 for a 12 bolt. one note, van rears DONT fit, whatever you buy has to come from a squarebody, 73-87.

if the pieces of metal got into everything else, the only part of that thing that is still good is the case itself (maybe) and the maybe the carrier (not the gears, just the carrier).

Re: HELP! identify the scatterd pieces

The biggest problem in the puzzle is the round shaft, it's hardened steel. The force required to break this peice is hard to imagine. The housing is probably screwed. Without jigs and alot of money it's cheaper to replacing the assembly. Good luck, Ron..

the transmission is a stage 3 comp trans from patc and the 1-2 chirps the tires everytime, and theyre 245's, so i think after a couple months of that constant shift shock the worn rear end let a piece loose and it jammed the ring and pinion going down the road at 45mph. truck had 3.08

so we are thinking maybe an 88-98 rear diff would have more chance of being a posi i know you have to re weld spring/shock hangers but it should just bolt in and go after that right?

Re: HELP! identify the scatterd pieces

Yes it will bolt in after you move the spring perches but the 88-98 rear end is just a bit wider I believe. 1/2 inch or so, it will push your tires closer to the lip of the rear fender. Which looks better in my opinion but you will have to check your wheel clearance.

Re: HELP! identify the scatterd pieces

Looks like what is left of a Gov-Loc rear carrier. They are known for doing that . Mine shot pieces through the rear cover when it came apart back in the day. I have never had another with the Gov-Loc setup.
