Stock suspension flexed out

Mind you it's the heavy duty option... Had it not been for the welded rear, it would NOT have gotten that high up on the embankment.

I think he meant the spider gears are welded together. Basically a poor man's locker. Some people call it "Lincoln Locked," due to the Lincoln brand of welders.

I've never really heard of problems coming from it other than the natural downfalls of a locker. As long as it's properly welded up, it should work fine. Lots of off-roaders do it on mud trucks and such and run huge tires, with nothing but good results. I'm with you though, I'm still not going to do it. It's a chance I don't want to take.

Honestly, I was in a fix and had no choice. My 12 bolt was going in my Blazer because of the SAME reason from an IDENTICAL rear. 10-bolt 3:08 GovLoc. They both blew the same week.

I'm on a slow hunt for a 14-bolt 9.5" for the GMC though

I've been putting 1,100 miles a month on it, mostly highway and city driving [Philly's roads SUCK too] and it's been alright. I can go 85 and it doesn't vibrate!

I had a buddy that did it on a 2wd "pre-runner" style truck years ago. He fragged the gears on a trail, and had to be rescued in the middle of nowhere. We pulled it down once back in the shop and it was clear the welds created weak points. Since then I have felt its better to do it right than weld the spiders.

I installed a mini spool in the rear we built for my brother-in-law 2 weeks ago. Looks like a nice cheap alternative and there are no created weak points.

#1. Lincoln welders kick ass

#2. Driving at any speeds and your rear end breaks and locks up can result in some serious injury.

I could really only see failure if someone cool it quickly by putting it in water or pouring oil over the top of it. other than that it should be reliable.

it wont be reliable. you cannot weld or put excess heat into machined/heat treated steel and or any type of alloy. it will cause the metal to break down and crack.

think of a big ice block sitting on a table. quickly take a heat gun to it and you will see the ice block crack. same thing with treated steel.

getting it home is one thing ,relying on it isn't a good idea
some PO of my 88 burb welded the rear and bits were a floatin ,worked for a while tho
didn't know when i bought it tho,wouldn't think to check that
cost me bout 1200 to get rebuilt

What tazman87 said in spades! The manufacturing sequence on anything made of steel is: cut (shape), weld, machine, heat-treat. You can't weld anything that has been machined and expect it to hold it's shape, much less the strength.

had a buddy of mine blow his rear end ONLY because it was slowing going on him, not because he welded the diff...but when you wrap the car around a pole and nearly hitting on coming traffic..life is at stake.

It's only a temporary fix really, It'll definately be swapped out before I put my 465/208 in it.
