~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
looking for a cluster from a heavy duty truck that has the tach and fuel on the same gauge. Let me know what you got and how much to ship to 55060. Thanks, Charlie
Chuck, I don't have the link handy, but there is a company that makes just the tach/fuel gauge insert, and all you have to do is swap out your existing fuel gauge for it and run the tack wiring. No cluster swap required. If you search the 73-87 forum, you will likely find it. I plan on getting one of these for my 75. I think they are just under $200...comparable to a medium duty cluster that may or may not work, and requires more installation time.
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
From what year?? I have one from an early 70s and one from the 80s. The 80s has the 4k tach but will work on a gasser. I haven't had time to take pics and post up....
I put one in my truck, super easy. It was $210 shipped. Look in the 73-87 message board for "combo Tach/Fuel gauge cluster" head.
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
I want to put it in my 78 big 10. Truck is completely stock but I just want a factory tach instead of a aftermarket one cluttering up my dash somewhere. Jeff you should call me
Eric, that is an early one (amp gauge), and will not work with a late 70's truck (volt gauge). Wiring is completely different, and can cause problems if simply stabbed in the truck
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
Jeff, i thought the early ones had a mechanical oil gauge? What year would this cluster be? I also have one with an 85 mph speedo, but not the newer font style... 79-80 maybe?
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
That is weird. Has an AMP gauge but electric oil gauge. Mine is like that one but has the mech oil gauge, and a single air pressure gauge. I will get some pics this weekend....
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
The big trucks went longer with the old stuff. Chances are that cluster pictured is out of about a 75-77 C60 or something with a big 6 since it has a 5k tach. Still wired like the 73/74 smaller squares and I'd be a bit scared of the AMP part.
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
I seriously only want the fuel gauge with tach! If i was to buy this will I be able to pull my stock fuel gauge and put this one in and hand wire tach? This is the problem I want to use my cluster its perfect with working clock. Just so used to driving a square with factory tach and this is one of only a few options my 78 is missing...... So any input here will help me out big time..Thanks guys!! And tms Thanks for posting pics! I like the whole vacum gauge and everything and I want that cluster but the only thing I would use is the tach part..... I'm interested in it for sure depending the hoops I have to jump through to make the fuel gauge work!!!!!
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
You can swap in just the tach/fuel gauge but need to swap the circuit board too. Not hard, but be easier just to unplug on cluster and plug in another. Also, there is a post somewhere how to convert amp to volt gauge, IIRC just a matter of moving one wire.
Are you sure about the circuit swap...wouldn't the actual truck wiring need to change too?
Chuck, you might be able to get away with just swapping the gauge out and running your own wire for the tach...I don't know.
To me, it makes sense just to buy the one J Knight purchased, plug and play install...doesn't get much easier and less confusing than that...looks OE too.
I'll call you this weekend.
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
Charlie,
I have a tach/fuel combo by itself, but the needle is broken on the fuel gauge. Should be easy enough to swap one from another of the small gauges, but wanted to mention it. '70s style font, can't remember if it has the blue ring or not.
I don't know what is involved with cutting the housing to fit the tach, or wiring the fuel gauge (without the proper circuit board)...
I don't know if this is something you want or not, can get a pic if needed (at work now).
Not sure what its worth, PM if interested...
Thanks,
Joe
Re: ~~~WTB tach and fuel gauge all in one for my 78 chevy~~~~
Clusters are the same between the two, just won't have the hole behind the tach for the wire harness to go thru. Circuits are totally different, but could modify it to work.
I just picked up another oddball one, out of an early 70s, 4K tach with small fuel gauge but has a vacuum gauge. I was under the impression only diesels got the 4k tach. Says "V-EIGHT" on the side of the truck. But that can be easily swapped.
you should be able to swap the volt gauge in,move a few wires around as needed
if the tach is for a six ,won't work for an 8
my 78 with tach,79 without....both blue rings
If you want a 77-78 style tach/gauge cluster I have one-PM me if you want it or want to see pics-it's very nice and has complete tach harness as well. It is not a big series truck cluster-but is set up with a volt gauge, elec. oil psi gauge and of course the tach-and NO broken mounting tabs. $150 plus shipping takes it.
