How long can a engine sit and still be ok?

I have a lq4 I bought, it has been sitting on a stand in my garage for 3 years. It is complete engine with plugs in it and it spins over free by hand. I turned the engine upside down and poored oil in behind all the pistons and have left it sit for couple weeks now and the oil has ran past the rings and is now in the chambers. I bought this engine to put a different cam, heads pretty much everything be sides the crank, pistons and rods. I was planing on finally getting the parts for it and putting it together in about a month. I was going to take it down the the short block pop all the caps off then check the bearing to see how loose they are. Assuming there good shoot some assembly lube in all the bearings can put new arp fasteners in. I plan on starting it in a few months but a friend of mine said not leave it sit for very long. If I coated all the moving parts with assembly lube and primed the oil system would the engine be fine sitting for better part of a year?

I sprayed some wd into the cylinders, and used a nice coat of assembly lube on everything. Fired over first time, and had sat for a while in the junkyard and then 6-7 mo in the garage.

We have motors sit on the shelf a long time, as long as they are sealed well there is no problem. You will want to swap out some gaskets but you'd do that anyway for good measure.

keep it in a dry place, put some Mystery oil in the cylinders and it should be fine for a year.

Leave them in the motor, or better yet, get the flow tested and cleaned. when they come back keep them in the shipping box and you're good to go.

Otherwise I tend to pull them and throw them in a ziplock bag. But I have also not stored them for a long period of time.

I have a 5.3 that sat for 3 years after I got it and no telling how long it sat before that. Before I started it for the first time I loaded all the cylinders up with Marvel top oil and I let it sit over night. The next morning I started her and she ran on 5 or 6 cylinders for a minute or two. As soon as a few stuck rings and valves loosened up she ran as smooth as silk on all 8 and does so to this day.
