headers don't fit?
Hey Guys,
I need some help... I just bought a 65 c10 with 250 ci inline 6cly... the truck came with a set of tube headers and a offenhauser 4bbl manifold... they were not installed so my first job has been to put them on. The problem I'm having is that the three tubes that go to the front half of the motor seem to run right into the the motor mount when I try to install them. The other group of tubes that feed from the rear of the motor seem to fit OK. Has anyone else had this problem? Did chevy put the motor mount in a different location on different size engines? Do I need to remove the motor mount, put on the headers and then reinstall the motor mount? I THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS! Lars |

i had long tube headers on my 68 panel truck with 250 six and everything cleared fine. pretty much same frame. did you try switching headers front to back?

Yea, I've tried every combination I can think of, I guess I'll take off the motor mount... but I really can't see how it will fit under there. Thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe it's a 292 that someone dropped in? They are a little taller, maybe that's why it doesn't fit?

Hey, I only know that the previous owner said the engine is a 250... But I don't know what it is for sure.... how am I gonna find out what engine it is? Thanks

The quickest way I know is the position of the fuel pump. On the 292 it is further back on the engine than the 250. As you can also see, the 292 has much taller side plates.

the 230, 250 & 292 header should be the same

Thanks to all for your help! I'm gonna look at my engine and figure out which one I have? I think I'll need to modify the engine mount or buy new headers.

I have heard that they do not make the long tube headers for the 292 (one of Stacey David's shows ....Gears I think). I'd say the taller deck height would cause the tubes to hit if they were a set from a 250.
All theory in my part as I have never had a 292.

it must be a 292 another way to tell is if your motor mounts are not directly across from each other the 292 motor mounts are offset as opposed to the 250 and 230. I have long tube headers on my truck and there are no clearance issues at all.

I had headman headers on the I6 in my 65 and they fit really tight up against the back of the engine munt. I think I remember needing to hammer a bit to make fit, the front one always laid up against the engine mount when installed.

If they are the cheap "flow tech" ones from jegs or summit (part 11530 I think) they are for a 4wd and do not fit a 2wd without modification. The height of the frame comes in to play on the two different drive lines.

you need to remove the rear u shaped mount to put the rear one on and use some wedging to get the front on i did this with my flowtechs i installed on my 230 what you do is unbolt that mount and it slides out of the tube and re install once you have both headers on
