Rebuild 600K Mile Engine OR Not
Team:
I just pulled the engine from Gramps' truck. The odometer reads 575K miles and my grandfather had the engine overhauled once since 1970. Would you even consider getting an engine with this kind of miles, machined and rebuilding it? All input and opinions would be appreciated. Mahalo,

No reason not to as long as there are no cracks anywhere and as long as it has not been bored too far.
Check the bore size and if it is not too far over (I would not go more than +.060, but that is just me) then have the block magnifluxed (sp). |

The speedo can't actually read 575,000 miles. Even if it could, there's no way a '70 model carbureted engine will go 575,000 without needing boring, unless it has been done before.
The last digit on the odometer represents tenths, not miles.

Depends....Off the top of my head... is the engine already apart? Was it bored over on the previous overhaul? My suggestion would be to take it to a reputable engine builder/machine shop and have them check the block for you, making sure the cylinders are round, not tapered or oval shaped, and check for cracks.

Only your machine can tell you for sure, anything else is a guess.

Agree with above, just have them Mic it out and check the block over they will let you know
