need ideas for sound deadening material for suburban bed

need ideas for sound deadening material for suburban bed.

got a 71 suburban with some load exhaust. making it the wifes daily driver to save money and need some ideas what would be good to put down on the bed (wood floor) that can be removed later in case I need to do some work. I have used dynomat in the past in my car, but that stuff once on is a nightmare if you need to remove.

I am also curious what others have done for carpet back there?

thanks

Um, Dynamat is the best as you know but expensive. I have used rolls of mastic type adhesive used for house windows when setting into framing on exterior walls. Its cheap but Ok as it will lay flat and not vertically like inside a door. Also, I prefer the original rear rubber liner. I put it over the replacement bed liner I bought from LMC. So there are 3 layers of deadening and it is easy to clean/sweep. my 2 cents.

I would think the cheapest, and less hassle fix would be to just fix the loud exhaust.

But, if you wanted to keep it loud...
I would just throw down a sheet of jute padding on the wood floor with carpet on top, then dynamat the inner cargo walls behind the side panels. These old burbs are like tin cans, since the factory didn't care to insulate any of the sheet metal.

Personally I prefer a quiet sounding exhaust system... Lets me enjoy the drive, and I can hear the drive train for anything that may be in trouble. Then again my burb has had a loud exhaust most of it's life, and so you could say that I have just grown tired of having a loud truck.

honestly the most cost effective way to fix the problem is a pair of manifolds magnaflow mufflers and tail pipe out the back out the rear bumper.

I installed a complete carpet kit with heavy jute backing and a ton of rattle trap (dynamat rip off) and that helped a lot with sound proofing but not cheap.

Re: need ideas for sound deadening material for suburban bed

There are a lot of products that are cheaper than dyna mat. I use one designed to insulate fire place flus. Foil with the tar type backing. Works great. But I'm beating it isn't just the cargo area. These burbs are lacking sound deading all over, doors, roof, fire wall, this makes for like driving in a tin can. I'm in agreement with the rest........ exhaust is the cheapest. Oh and did I say maybe even before that. A really awesome stereo........ Feeling your pain, Happy Wife= Happy Life......

My problem with the noise was even with a stereo I couldn't hear it on the hwy. I am in the process of dropping my headliner to install some Fat mat on the roof the insulate the entire roof to help keep the sun from cooking us inside.

I run a rubber mat intended for horse stalls. Fits nicely and very thick to muffle sound, although my hummin' cummins is still easily heard inside.

3/4" thick & 4'x8' for roughly $40 at Tractor supply.

Mass Loaded vinyl. you won't have to glue it down, but it'd probably help

I like that tractor supply mat. It is what I am thinking about doing with my back. For the front and mid, I am going to spray it with lizard skin heat and sound deadener then top that with a bed liner. Lose all the carpet. I am hesitant to spray it on the wood floor, so was going to just top it with a mat for now.

I agree with Notchbackgta. MLV for blocking exhaust noise.

Wink Re: need ideas for sound deadening material for suburban bed

I have used several methods on both my burbs. I fill large garbage bags full of packing peanuts and form them into the sides of rear quarters. Behind the trim panels. Also you can buy ice shield roofing rolls at any building supply. This is almost a perfect match to dinomat at a fraction of the cost. I use this on the floors. Then cover with your carpet etc.. When I travel I have thick egg crate looking foam sheets, like they use in sound proofing booths. I lay them out in the back area. You could use this in the rear quarter panels too. This works pretty well for me and doesn't cost a ton.

Re: need ideas for sound deadening material for suburban bed

I used Regupol sound deadening mat intended for use below tile floors in condominiums. It's basically recycled tires, shredded and extruded into rolls 4' wide and 3/16" thick. I removed the entire interior and contact cemented this stuff everywhere. On the back bed I only glued the perimeter in case I need access. Cut the engine and exhaust noise in half and it let's the stereo sound as it should.

What about some good old rubberized under coating beneath the bed possibly the whole underside of the body, i it scratches off just reapply, used it on an old 79 pickup, just kept using what the original owner was using. Seemed to work well keeping rust away especially up here in New Jersey. Just a thought.
