Re: '68 gmc cummins project

You will probably be welding on that frame to fit the motor and trans. You might have painted a bit prematurely.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

CharlesUFarley yeah paint is early but i wanted to paint the frame before i get the new suspension and disc brakes. once i have all my suspension and brakes on ill set the cab back on and fit the engine, it will be easier to grind off and repaint spots i need to weld on rather than paint the frame a little later when im actually ready for the engine.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

haha thanks Beast68cst, a lil late for a response on that last message.

I did manage to chop 1.5" (2L) out of the oil pan for the 5.9 for the added ground clearance. here are a couple pics before repainting the pan.

and as for any other progress at the moment. I ordered a 3"/5" drop which will sit more like 4/6 once the engine/trans are in the truck, hopefully lol. My old trailing arms are pretty rotten so I need another set of trailing arms for suspension install. my goal this spring/summer is get the frame sitting on suspension and save for full disc conversion.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

not much progress yet, as it sits im waiting on spare funds for a set of cpp 1" drop rear trailing arms. the suspension will be done once those arrive. I got the steering rack and tie rods put on the spindles i still need sway bars and new bushings and a new power steering box in a bit.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

I made some recent progress of chopping the bed sides, filling side markers and gas filler. next i need to get myself a hammer and dolly set. and a dent puller and start some dent repairs. Im going to start saving up for engine parts now. this is the my favourite part.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

Just a quick parts list no accurate or specific prices yet just ball park pre shipping costs
Engine 98.5 24 valve 5.9L cummins
-Ppump conversion Kit w/.120" ss lines : crazycarl - $1850
-194/220 cast cam : hamilton - 700
-103lb valve springs : hamilton - 400
-1.3" tappets : hamilton - 200
-extreme duty pushrods : hamilton - 350
-stage 2 port/polish with 3* valve job + o-rings : ??? - 2500-2700
-12mm head studs : arp - 900
-350hp 7x.015 + extrude honed bodies : dap - 900
-air-air intercooler : spearco/bd - 1400/1200
-intercooler boots + clamps : spearco/bd - 200
-sno stage 2 water/meth boost cooler with controller : sno - 600
-grid heater delete : gdp - 100
-intake horn : gdp/ats - 350/400
-dual 15" electric fans : flexalite - 600
-fass 260gph lift pump w/ 1/2" lines : fass - 900
-S467.7 FMW w/race cover : borgwarner - 1700

-Total before Head work, tax, shipping : $11-12g

I have not found a machine shop near by for an accurate quote. the price above is a previous quote but that shop no longer machines heads. so i may have to ship my head to the states if i don't find one in western canada.

after head work probably close to $15,000 engine only.
transmission suncoast 47re built auto $8,000.

Grand total - $23-25,000 est.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

as i dug into the cab a little deeper i realized i need lots of floor repairs.
-front floor panels both sides
-inner rockers both sides
-rear cab corners both sides
-rear cab mounts both sides
-front pillars both sides
-i already have outer rockers

but that can wait. im saving for engine goodies now. im eager to get this 5.9 built and fit it in place. i sketched up some mounts but i wont build them till i get the engine mostly built enough to test fit, remeasure and fab a set up mounts.

Re: '68 gmc cummins project

Be sure to remove the 2 center stake pockets. Nothing looks sillier than a short bed with the center stake pockets IMO. It's a dead giveaway that it's been shortened.

Great progress!
