C 60 brake upgrade questions

My neighbor has what I believe is a 68 C 60. That is I believe its a 68 its definitely a C 60 . He is asking me how to upgrade the brakes, he says it only has the single system master and wants to have the double for safety. Im surprised that a truck of that year has that system especially that size since pickups had the dual system brakes starting in 67. My 66 C 60 had a brake booster under the cab he says this one does not. Should it or was that an option? What year would have the dual system and can I buy the parts to upgrade it and what would that entail? Thanks for any advice/knowledge you can give me and if anybody needs more details I can go check it out or get pictures if need be.

Just bumping this thread up.

Personally, the only upgrades I know of are simply taking the entire axle assemblies from a newer truck and making them fit under your old truck. I don't know what models/years work.

Depending what time of system you currently have (some have boosters on the firewall) some have no booster, some have boosters under the cab along with another master. If under the cab I would scrap that and install a booster on the firewall.
Splitting the system is straight forward. First check the lines and see if they are worth keeping. Mine were not and on my backing plate there were two brake cylinders, one on the top and one on the bottom. If yours is like that check the line running between the cylinders too.
I used a truck dual master but I can not remember exactly the year but I think it was from a late 80's Topkick. I used a booster from a 90's Chevy 3500. PM me if you want more detail.

Re: C 60 brake upgrade questions

i haven't finished it yet but I ran all new lines to the firewall where I plan to run a hydraboost and dual master cylinder of a newer medium duty and re-purpose the old single master cylinder for clutch slave cylinder duty as there is NO room for a mechanical linkage as the big ole Detroit 8V71 fills the engine bay and half the cab
