Door Lock - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm repairing my truck at my computer tonight.

The passenger door will not lock with the door closed, however it locks with the door open. When closed the button will only push down about 1/3 of the way and then hits something.

I could remove the door panel and look, but it's warmer in the house.

Thanks for any advice (besides get my butt out to the garage) you can provide.

sounds like a strike plate problem to me,,, did you try pushing on the door and locking????

try adjusting the plate around......

I agree, try pulling on the door or pushing on it. If the door then locks, you need to adjust the striker in that direction.
Does it have new - newish door seals on it by chance?

The door has fairly new seals and tends to not shut correctly without a little extra force.

Went out and tried the push on the door while liking, and ya'll are correct again. It locked while maintaining pressure on the door.

Do I adjust the strike plate out slightly to correct?

Have the same issue on a 72 GMC..

Since the passenger door isn't used as much, I'd go ahead and adjust the striker a little bit.
For the drivers side I would live with it untill the rubber is 'broken in'.

be glad you don't have to take the lock mechanism out of the door and work on it, that is one big pain in the rumpus. the big rivet holding mine together decided to just give out last fall, at first I couldn't lock my door and then the door wouldn't stay closed when shut. Took about 2 hours, because I kept dropping small pieces into the door and then had to fish them out with a magnetic wand.

Dang this board is so informative. I am having the same issue with my truck. I figured it was the new door seals but I didn't know I could adjust the striker plate.

I would try to live with it for a while....if the new rubber is the problem, usually one good hot summer will solve the problem. If you adjust the striker more than likely the door will stick out

Many good comments. I tried to adjust and couldn't get enough relief to allow the lock to work without the door being out of alignment with the body panels.

I guess I'll see what the hot Texas summer does for it.

same problem with mine, new door seals, ive moved the plate around with not a lot of luck. has anyone figured any easy fix?

i have the same problem. been running for about 8 months without a seal because i was under the impression that i had to pay someone to align the door for me. I gave up after 2 days of trying to do it myself.

I KNOW I KNOW...get's loud in there on the freeway but it's not at the top of my list.

A new door latch will cure the problem. New door seals make a worn latch worse because they put more pressure on the catch in the latch, which you relieve by pushing in on the door. The design of the latch does not allow for too much wear for the lock pawl not to function right. John
