WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
Hey gang,
Entertaining the idea of picking up a this type of truck. Used to have a slammed 64 short fleet, miss it and been wanting a 4x4 for years. I found one that is project condition but not too bad. Its in primer, bed wood is rotted out, has minor ish dents and dings, usual rust in cab corners and lower fenders but not too bad, and in general will need lots of TLC. Drivetrain is original but has an unknown 327 in it. Aftermarket wagon wheels with 33x12.5 tires. It is however, a driver. It does start, run, and stop. I wouldnt be trying to restore it, just keep it going and personalize it. What do you think something like this is worth? Thank you |

What it is worth is going to vary a bit according to different areas of the country.

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
Numbers will be all over the place especially if the seller has the word "rare" or "survivor" in the ad.
As far as being a project...they pretty much all are I think. Plan on spending near 3-4 times what you could ever get out of it if you're looking at keeping it and doing it right. Without pics and in CA, could be 2 - 4K range for a solid driver that needs cosmetic work? Less if the mechanicals are also rough or if it's a swap. Then again, Ive seen people ask ridiculous $$$ for stuff I wouldn't touch. It really boils down to what you're willing to spend and what you're willing to walk from. Definitely check for the "K" in the vin, front left frame area should be stamped with part of the vin as well. I can understand not posting pics if its a deal you don't haven't sewn up yet, but it would help to see to get a better gauge.

I've decided to pass on it, I think it's more a project than I want at this time...that said, the owner is super friendly, and I think he's willing to deal.. |

That actually looks to be a pretty cool rig. And from what people tend to ask for them around here, the price doesn't seem out of line.

That truck is in pretty dog gone good shape all things considered. You will be hard pressed to find one better for that price.

I was thinking the same Captain. It is a pretty decent price for a cool truck and it sounds fairly solid.

Not a super bad price, seen them twice that and way worse shape than that.
I paid $100 bucks for my '64 with 230. Transplanted a 350 out of a 79 GMC van, then when that went, I just recently picked up an ATK rebuild, now need some various parts to drop her in. |

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
The owner sent me additional pics and talked on the phone with me about it. It sounds like the body is a bit rougher in person, it has assorted small/medium dents and it sounds like aft of the bed wheel wells have been creased a bit where that wrap around bumper connects to.

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
If I did get it I'd have to get power steering in it so the wife could drive it in a pinch.
I've been reading up on threads here. Sounds like the most common way to do that is to do an axle swap from a later truck. Is it possible to get powersteering and retain the original front axle? A lot of why this truck appeals to me is that the drivetrain is original. There's no way to adapt a later model power steering box to the existing axle? |

Yes you can add power steering while keeping the drum brake closed knuckle Dana 44. It has been done many times. Here is one thread.

Wow, thanks Captain, that was an informative read.
Looks like between your plate, and buying the power steering box, pitman arm, drag link, ps pump, brackets, belt, and hoses, all new, it would run me $500-600 for the conversion? Doesn't seem too bad. Shoot, now I am re-thinking purchasing the truck. What to do. |

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
The 4k isn't bad.
If you could get it for 3500 I'd drive it like I stole it....keeping in mind it's got drum brakes of course. Lol. Depending on where you're at, if you pick it up I'd be willing to meet and show you the ps set up on mine. Not nearly as clean or polished as Captains set up but it would paint a better picture for you. Mine originally came with the drum front axle. The ps was already in it when I bought it. Good luck on your decision and post pics when you buy it. Lol

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
I paid $500 for my 66 k10 about 4 years ago. All original truck, complete minus the 283 engine.
That said, I scrapped every single body part. Bed, bumper, front clip, cab, doors, everything. It was that bad, that rusted, dented and rotted. I support what most are saying about the seller's asking price. Not bad at all, especially if you have spent enough time trying to find a k10/k20. Super low numbers compared to the c10/c20's, and worked 4x's harder than the 2wds. To find one in great condition is nearly impossible, and the ones that are out there in good condition, are mostly not for sale. Just my opinion, but if you're wanting one and come across a good one for a good price, don't hesitate. I beat out three other guys who were wanting to buy the k10 I bought, I brought it home the same day the ad was posted. |

That truck is a good deal at $4000! I'm not in the market but I keep an eye on it as I have one waiting for a restoration. The market isn't going down...... I wouldn't wait.

FYI,
It sold to another fella (I wonder if he saw it here on this board?) for $3000. Gonna be a father/son project I guess. Thought you guys might like to know. It was nice of the seller to keep me in the loop, I'm getting a better feel for the market now. |

Re: WIW 66 K10 original 4x4 drivetrain Long fleet
Well, hope that the new owner finds this place is they're not already here.
I also got our '63 thinking "father - son project" in 2008. My boy turns 14 in June. He's helped as much as he could but I think my math and timeline were a little off from my expectations. It turned into more of a "father built son a project" ! There will be others. Keep us posted. For those of us that are on additional project lockdown (like myself), posts like this are kinda like imagining what we'd do if we won the lottery......in a much, much smaller scale.
