We have a lot of regulations in this country. Some work and some are in my opinion are kind of dumb.

But. I have to say. As much as I hate to admit it. The smog/pollution laws seem to work. I remember walking home from school when I was a kid with my eyes burning because of the smog. And I just don't see that anymore. At least not like when I was a kid. You could see it. A thick layer of crud hanging in the air. It would sting your eyes and you could feel it in your throat. It was nasty.

Okay... I just complimented smog laws. (Unbelievable) I'll go wash my mouth out with soap now. I must be hallucinating.
We solved the auto pollution problem back around 1990, but the EPA still has to microregulate 99.1% clean to 99.2% clean just to justify its continued existence

(sorry if that's too political)

Around 1990 I would not swim in the Hudson river. Let alone eat fish from it. Much cleaner now you can eat one fish a month and be safe

Sorry, I just keep thinking about George Carlin. He says he swam in the Hudson River when he was a kid. I think he was joking, not sure.
He did an act about 10 years ago on germs, immune system and viruses.
Funny and relevant for today.

Yes . Rain pulls down pollution and small streams run into rivers .

Re: Sold American!

Had a conversation with a local landscaper he has 7 trucks. Every one says AMERICAN MADE on the windshield. One of the peel and stick jobs . Yes they were made in America but they are owned buy an Italian company . My 3500 CTD was made in Mexico by a German company . He didnt like hearing that, he thought Chrysler bought fiat.

Just like alot of people think they bought Daimler.

The NEW cars of the late 1980s and 1990s produced very little pollution.

Of course there were still tens of millions of older vehicles on the road at that time. It has taken a while for most of them to be off the road. Meanwhile the EPA has cranked standards from 95% to 99% pure

Like you said took years to see the results. In 1994 wife had a new Ford escort wagon . Basically a Mazda I was driving a 1970 oldsmobile delta 88 convertible. My first new vehicle was a 2008 GMC Savanna extended wb .

They were cleaner than their older counterparts but still produced tons of emissions each year. If they were so clean why do they impose new regulations to clean them up more. And new cars still dump tons of emmisions into the atmosphere every day

Because once a bureaucracy exists, they have to justify their continued existence even after the original problem has been solved

And new cars mostly just emit carbon dioxide and water vapor. In some places polluted by other sources, car exhaust is cleaner than the air going into the engine.
