Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

Searched the forum and found answers to all my wire questions except this one. At the firewall connector, attached to the same terminal as the coil wire (a resistor wire) is a 12 or 10 gauge Pink wire. It is long as if it went to the carb.
It is a Midwest truck so I wouldn't think it would have any Smog controls, but I've been wrong before. It's a 69 GMC 1500 with the 307 and Turbo400. Factory carb was gone when I got it. I haven't seen any diagrams that show the the Pink wire attached to the coil wire terminal at the firewall. There is a smaller pink wire that comes through the firewall next the the connector, and I know that went to a switch on the carb and then went to the kickdown on the 400.

Any help appreciated.

In post # 302 in the link below
There is a Big nice and clear copy of the wiring diagram.

I had to scroll side to side to see it all.
It's nice

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

Is there a connector on the wire? On the carburetor there is sometimes an idle solenoid for anti-dieseling on some trucks. It could have been used for an HEI distributor or an electric choke, or some other after-1969 added accessory.

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

Stock '69 did not have an idle stop solenoid. The white/orange/purple wire ties into the yellow wire that goes to the "R" terminal on the starter. It has nothing else attached to it from the factory, so the pink wire has been added.

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

Are you running Points Ignition or HEI?
If it's Points, now, could be the PO ran HEI, and switched ditributors before selling it. And the pink wire was for his HEI 12 vdc feed to the + Coil contact.
If it is HEI, you don't need the Yellow 20 leads to the Coil and Starter.

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

Appreciate all the info.

Here's a picture . It looks like a factory wire to me, the little stub of wire sticking out is the coil resister wire which attached to the yellow wires that went to the coil and starter. It was burned up inside the harness so I cut it out of the harness. The heavy pink wire had a factory end on it. The harness might be from a 70-72. I'll be running an HEI so I'm using the pink wire will work perfect for power to the HEI. Was just curious what it was originally for. If it is something added by the PO, they did a fine job making it look neat. The rest of the wiring in the truck is original.

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

The connectors are called Packard terminals. GM [and probably some other Detroit manufacturers] used them. You can still buy them at NAPA. They are a better grade [for automotive applications] than the 3M type crimp-on connectors they sell at electronics stores.
If you have 12 vdc with Ignition ON at the far end of the Pink wire, you should be good to go for HEI.
HEI became an option in '74, and was Standard shortly after that.

Re: Heavy Pink wire at firewall connector

I would go (in the past) to the junk yards and get the HEI wire out of the cars for HEI conversions.
