CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO ASSEMBLE A STEPSIDE BED FROM SCRATCH.

I have been looking for the same information with no luck. I have a 68 GMC stepside with the original wood in the bed. I have another disassembled stepside bed that we are going to reassemble for another truck. I plan to use the GMC as a model. If you are not in a big hurry, I could send you some pictures when we start. If you do find any other information I would like to see it.

Get the Assembly Manual - you won't be sorry. Costs about $35 but it's money well spent IMO.

I have the Assembly Manual and find it of limited use. Never enough detail. If you go to the section on the stepside bed, there is no detailed information, just overall pictures. I would like some good exploded views with part numbers.

Yea, I've found too that some sections aren't as good as we'd want. I couldn't look in mine to see what the section on stepsides looked like because it's on loan to a friend.

Its pretty easy actually. if ya build it on the frame you should maybe put some 2x4's across the truck frame to hold it. bolt the sides to tthe front then the rear cross sill.(not sure if thats what its called) add all the other cross sills. should be able to look on your frame to see where the ones go that hold the bed down. you have to raise the bed up then a bit to put your boards in. outside 2 pieces first then just fillem in. fenders and then steps. when bolting togethter the sides and fron panles try to keep them as square as u can. stainless bolts are very nice. have fun, I did mine all by myself w/ noone to ask.

ps good idea to leave bolts loose until u get it all togethter then go back and tighten everything.

Drew, I was just looking in my LMC catatog and it as some good exploded pictures of the stepside. Shows all the bolt attachment points for the end panel, step, tailgate, bedsides, and fenders. Maybe they will help. Also GMCPaul's site has a good FAQ sheet on wood installation.
