Whats your 1950 front suspension?

Just thinking ahead-what is anyone running for front suspensions on the 47-54s I have looked at the S-10 frame swap but actually Im leaning more towards a Heidts or similiar setup for the 50.

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

This is a crossmember manufactured for our AD trucks and this is on a 53 that I am building.
It is made by Industrial Chassis Inc in Phoenix AZ ade it uses Dodge Dakota bolt on suspension parts from a 86 to 80 Dodge Dakota and the prices are competative with the COMPLETE MII set ups, but the DOdge is a bigger truck which makes is just right for our AD's

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

The Dodge Dakota parts are from a 86 to 90, my error not the 80 to 86!!!

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

My '54 had a Pacer front end we cut off and replaced with the Must.II front by TCI. It was the best choice for me. In the long run it will be cheaper to maintain and rebuild. Pacer parts a harder to come by. Not to mention the cleaner look of the TCI parts.

I did the IFS from Fat Man Fabrications. His stuff is so awesome and comes with the polished tubular stuff for no extra charge!

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

I bought my frame from a guy who had it professionaly built. 1980 Camaro front clip, 1947 mid frame and rear clip is a narrowed 1985 chevy pickup parallel leaf spring frame, It had a narrowed Ford 9" rear with new strange axles. Got the whole thing for 500 bucks. It is something i would never have tackled myself. At the same time I was doing mine a good buddy was building a 49 sedan delivery. He used a MII with air bags it was easy and it rides fine. He actually went with a junk yard assembly. After watching him I think I would do the same if I ever do it again. Just make sure whatever you use will be narrow enough to accomadate the wheels and tires you plan on using.LFE

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

was the camaro clip narrowed before it was installed? the track width is about 6" too wide for the AD trucks. they seem to be fine for the TF trucks. last thing you want is the front tires sticking out like rabbit ears. hit www.stovebolt.com and do a search on ad frame swap.

Now that you have all of your front parts for your truck can you tell me how much you have invested including the R&P brakes and motor mounts. The complete front end down to the flex lines and brake stuff. I want to compare it to what I spent on my Dakota stuff to see how they compare in price

Re: Whats your 1950 front suspension?

Here is a question that is comeing from a novice so here it goes.

I see alot of you guys use the weld in front end what is your idea of a bolt in frontend? I do see some kits that are the same just kinda wondering if they are a good or bad idea...

Thanks,
Cole

Have you looked into RB's or Chassis Engineering bolt on parts?

really nice dude! love your truck. what power steeringg setup did you use. i have owned AD'S in the past with leaves removed and even with the front end entirely rebuilt it still felt wobbly. i'm speaking from owning 6+ trucks with varius clips from corvair-camaro.

Saginaw steering box mounted on the outside of the frame. The kit can be had from Classic Performance. The sway bar on the front makes a HUGE difference. Still not as stable as IFS on bumpy back roads but fine on the paved roadways....and cheap. More pics can be seen here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2930870
