59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

I picked this up a few days ago. Just got it off the trailer yesterday. Unknown miles, one rust hole, about 95% original, and overall in very good shape. The truck was purchased new in California and then wound up stored in a barn in Oklahoma for 40 odd years.

I will be asking alot of dumb questions as I am new to the 55-59 trucks!

Here are some pictures:

Very Nice. I have not see very many longbed fleetsides. Can't wait to see what you do with her.

Welcome to the world of fat fendered trucks. Long box fleetsides look great when they are lowered. Looks like you found a decent survivor.

A little over $5K. More than I wanted, but a fair price I think for an original, and solid, big window, fleetside a day trip away. (The truck has been in Fort Worth, TX for the past year)

Nothing too exciting as I will keep the truck mostly stock. I don't plan on painting it anytime soon but I will have to before long as the climate down here will eat it away too fast. I will drive it a few times a week while fixing the small stuff and tinkering.

I enjoy driving my 64 C20 around town and I will really enjoy driving this truck around. I think it will turn a lot of heads!

That baby is saweet! Those old fleetsides are cool. One by me has a Napco conversion in it. The old guy promised it to me if he ever sells it! I stay in touch with him regularly.
Is this the year with the pointed chrome hubcaps on them? They would look cool if you could find them.

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

One non-stock thing I plan on doing is blasting and painting the wheels white. The truck has old 1960's bias-ply tires on it now. I think a fresh set of radials will make the ride a lot quieter.

While your painting...you could do the grille, front bumper and headlight doors too! If you could find an old three speed with an overdrive, that would be cool.

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

I found a 3sp overdrive for sale up around Dallas but he wanted $300 and it needed a total rebuild. That seemed a bit high to me. I am not sure if the overdrive unit would bolt on to my 3sp but it would still be a lot of money.

Thats about the going price for an OD 3spd depending on whats wrong with it. They can be difficult to get parts for. The 3sp OD should be a complete trans. if its just the back section it won't bolt up to your std. 3 spd. The out put shaft is not the same. Make sure it has the speed sensor and the solenoids.

Or you could send them away to chrome? Either way, it will compliment the patina well.

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

Also repaint the rear bumper silver and get the tailgate latch mechanisms and chains silver iridited (sp). Keep the stock swans neck mirror and remove the west coast wind grabbers. The chrome looks very good on the truck and the whole thing is a real nice vehicle.

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

I'd go with Rustoleum White Semi Gloss for the bumpers and grille. Thats what I did on mine when it was on the road, it had a nice faded blue patina. I kept the headlight bezels and grille blue to match the fenders. Easy to touch up when it got scratched by the brush. Look at my signature picture.

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

Thanks for the tips Guys.

I moved everything around in my building and got the 59 in there. I put it on stands and got the wheels off today and dropped them off at the blasters. The wheels are 15x5" and have GM stamped in them but I am not sure what they are off of, as they have no clips. At least the wheels all match. I will paint them white and install some new 235/75/15 tires that don't look too modern. I got the trans and rear end fluid changed yesterday.

While I am waiting for the wheels to be finished. I will be working on a lot of small projects on the truck:

Fuel Tank and Sender
Carb rebuild, (It runs great but floods when you start it cold)
Tighten outside door handle
Adjust the clutch
Replace speedometer and clear bezel
Headlight switch
Valve and side cover gaskets
Door weatherstrip
Install rear view mirror

Already Replaced:

Oil Cap Breather
Fuel Filter
Rad Cap
Generator Belt

Adjusted the shift linkage rod and cleaned the interior!

Re: 59 Apache 3200 Fleetside

For some reason, these trucks with the fleetsides are one of my favorites. I don't know why, I guess it is because there are so few of them. I just think they were very stylish for that era truck. Much more so than the Fords, even the Dodge beds were better looking than Fords.
