Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

Glad it's dune season,, I'm so disgusted I'm ready to give up. The money pit POS motor is wounded again after only 20-30 laps. And it's not like I beat up on this thing!!! 6500/6800 shift with a motor built for 7500+ and it's acting like a spun bearing...... but only a slight tap tap tap that sounds more like a broken valve spring,,, but valve springs dont effect oil pressure. oil psi dropped to 30 psi at idle (1200rpm).. PSI comes back to 60+ with even a slight rpm (1800+) but so does the tap tap tap...... I'm betting spun rod bearing. Glad this season is OVER,, I'm done!

That sucks man, its soo dang hard to "maintain" in this hobby....doesn't take much to blow it up, pop it, flip it, or just get out paced by how fast some of the other guys can spend money.

Re: Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

Thanks guys,, Yeah I wussed out and had my machinist assemble the short block after the squirter screw ordeal because I was just too busy and in a hurry to get the truck back on the track to finish the summer races. They assembeled the shortblock and I just slapped the heads and intake and valve train in it. So unless I find a failed 'part' this one is on the machine shop / engine builder. He's a stand up guy that he will take care of me. Parts fail,,, it's racing and that s**t happens, but this is built for 7500 / 750+HP,, and I'm only spinning 6600 (1-2) and 6800 (2-3) . If it's an assembly error it's just a winter project to get her back making noiuse,,, and the Nova will get ready for next January season opener.

I'll say one thing tho.. she may have been slow in the 5800' air ar SIR,, but she went out looking good

That does suck, Marv. Hopefully, like you said, your machinist takes care of you on this, providing it's not a parts failure of some sort. Relax and enjoy the off-season!

Re: Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

A little bit o good news on a day that might have a very dark ending (election day that is) Talked to the machinist today. and he said bring me the motor,, I'll make it right . This guy is the best machinist / engine builder in the state. I really expected nothing less but in this economy,, you just never know.

That's what I was hoping for, but apparently, we, the working class, are now officially the minority. Very disgusted...

Thats good news Marv . Usually when I tear up a motor I have half a dozen of my fair weather friends around wanting to see the carnage! Ya know kinda like a redneck at a nascar race waiting for a wreck.

Re: Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

Good news... bad news, and even more bad news....
Took the motor to the machinist and we opened it up together so there was no questions, excuses or BS on either side. Dropped the pan and I knew instantly... NOT the machinist fault,, or problem,, 100% me.
Tried to save a $60 1piece oil pan gasket with a healthy smear of the 'right stuff' ... NOT a good idea.
4" stroke in a SBC means the rotator swings REAL close to the pan rail,, and the RightStuff expands like 35%,, Means it squeezed out a bead of silicone on the inside of the pan rail. Rotating assembly kept pounding at it until it had a handfull of strings of silicone in the sump. Saw them hanging out of the oil pump pickup as the pan came off.

Spun 2 rod bearings. 10/10 of the POS eagle crank and have it re-nitride hardened,,, straightened and it will be ready to go,, estimate $350 to $400 with shipping to Cali for the gas nitride treat.

The BAD news,,, These are 6" 'stroker' version of the Lunati ProMod rods. Lunati don't make these any more.
Can't replace 2 of what you can buy,, so a whole new set of rods, clearance them for the cam clearance, and re-balance

I am getting real sick of this possessed SOB

Re: Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

Sucks to hear, but you gotta pay to play. Unfortunately your small mistake is costing big dollars on rods.
What is your machine shops name? I have had bad luck with several machinists in phx, and really need someone I can trust money going to. I have a long block being assembled right now, and I still will tear it all down and double check everything again.

Re: Welp,, blowed my S**t up again

I've used Wilkeys when Bruce was there, and Basko (ONCE, never again!!) Then I found Larry's Engine and Marine in Tucson. It's a haul for sure, but quality and SERVICE has gotten so damn hard to find.. it's worth the 75 miles to me for sure.
His forte is offshore race boats and motors, but has a LOT of upper end drag boat / cars and stuff out there. I figure if he can build crap to stay together coming in and out of the water at 9000rpm,,, he ought to be able to keep my junk together in the mid 7grand zone. I've had nothing but flawless work and service from them. Even in this deal. My fault 100%, but they are beating every bush and putting in lots of effort and work that isn't going on the invoice to help put things back in order as painlessly as possible. He's not cheap,, but then in this hobby what is!!!

I had good luck with Olivers and have Crowers now .

This sport isnt cheap . Best way to make a small fortune racing is start with a large one .
