Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

Thanks Guys,

Ol Blue, I think it looks OK without a roll pan too, but after seeing all the great metal fab work from all the people on this website, it has inspired me to give it a try, afterall, winter is coming.

Here is another pic of it, and it looks like the rear bumper sticks out too far, I am hoping the roll pan will change that

I think the rear bumper looks good. I wouldnt do a roll pan. If you are worried about it pull it in another inch or so before the tailgate. Here is a picture of mine. Also love the Christmas theme.

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

Hi Guys,

Took a bit of a break on the truck while it was being used outside with Santa.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do for door panels til I saw this youtube video and thought I would give it a try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHMEfFu2SsU&t=535s

So, I started with 1/8 fibreboard, spray adhesive, some 1/4 staples, some 3mm yoga mats, and some grey vinyl.

First I made a paper template of the door panel. I only made it to go down to the curve, as the fibreboard will not bend that much, and I plan to add carpet to the bottom 6+/- inches.

Then I cut out a piece of fiberboard and drew on my pattern. Ended up with 6 vertical panels at the bottom, and 1 large panel at the top that will have the window and door handle, as well as the arm rest. (originals from my 67 Tempest, painted and pads were wrapped in grey vinyl)

Then I cut each panel out of another piece of fibreboard, and glued pieces of the yoga mat to it. (cushion)

Then I glued and stapled each piece onto the full size door panel.

I have not installed them yet, as I will be doing a lot of interior work this winter and don't want them getting damaged.

For about $100 in material, here is what I have.

great ingenuity. one problem though, you are gonna feel guilty when you're in there unless you do a couple stretches first, all because of those yoga mats. haha.
looks awesome.

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

Thanks for the comments.

It was a fun project, and a clean project, as I only had a little glue on my fingertips. -no grease, no metal dust from grinding, and no crawling around on the floor under the truck..... a nice change.

8man - the arm rests are from the front doors of a 67 Tempest. The rears are the same but have an ash tray molded into them. The painted part was originally chrome, on plastic, but these were old and had turned yellow, so I just painted them. They are the same on all Pontiac A Bodies, Tempest, Lemans, GTO, from 1964 to 1967, and maybe for Chevelle, Skylark, and Cutlass?? but not sure.(see pic)

Youngrodder - I have never really done any interior work before, but this was enjoyable. I originally was thinking of 4 vertical panels, then 5, and settled on 6. I decided to keep is simple, but the design possibilities are endless.

dsraven - when I purchased the vinyl ($40) I asked if they had any foam and they said No. So I had to find some foam and I thought of a yoga mat..... sounds crazy, but it works.

Still lots to do, rear roll pan, tail pipes, interior, radio... etc

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

OK, it was time to finish up the rear. I wanted to add a roll pan and make 2 tail pipes.

First, I made a paper template of what I wanted, and a friend of mine bent the metal.

I then made 2 end pieces, welded them on, then, made a box and frenched in a place for the tag. I also notched the panel for the 2 tail pipes.

Once the roll pan was complete, I added a skim coat of filler to cover the bends from the metal brake and mixed up some paint (Tremclad/Rustoleum) and painted it.

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

Then, I had to try to be creative and add some patina.

When I drove the truck last Fall, it had no tail pipes, so after buying some 2 1/4 in pipe, 6 - 45* bends, and 2 - 90* bends, and I used some chrome tips I already had, it was time to create some tail pipes.

and here is the finished result.

I was thinking of using the bumper, but I like this, for now.

..... time to continue work on the interior.

The tail gate has been my test panel.

The original plan was to make the truck a light green, but then decided to match original. (and I added the reverse lettering)

That's really flying along now. Nice job on those interior panels and the roll pan! Did you ever sort out the non-functioning gauges?

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

Thanks for the comments guys.

Jason 56, you are one of the 'Metal Magicians' that inspired me to try and make the roll pan, thank you, I enjoyed the project.

Father&Son, the gauges were bothering me, and the mechanical speedo would not work with the NV3500 trans, so I broke down and purchased new Gauges. (install coming soon), also will be working on completing the interior. (headliner, rear cab panel, seat belts, radio, ...)

Re: 51 Chev on a S10 frame, named Dale

OK, time for an update on the Headliner.

I decided to keep the same style as the door panels, (5-6 inch wide grey panels) so purchased a sheet of 1/16 in fiberboard, some more grey vinyl, a couple more yoga mats, and some more contact cement.

I cut out the pattern (2 pieces) of the headliner and added an extra inch on both sides. The panels I made smaller, as the thickness of 2 panels, the foam, and the vinyl would not fit under the edge, so I would only need to put 1 layer of fiberboard under the edge with 1 layer of vinyl....make sense?
With the 2 panels placed beside each other, the seam is hidden.

Also, I added a bent metal panel (with yoga mat and vinyl) at each side as the fiberboard would not bend enough to curve over the doors.

Here are the pics, from design, to final pic with visors.
