*^%#* Head Gasket!

Fired up the Blazer yesterday to go to work and noticed a nice cloud of white steam pouring from the driver side exhaust. It slowly when away as the truck warmed up, but I parked it until I can tear it down. Oil didn't have any water in it and water didn't have any oil, so I think a cracked block/head are not to blame. What a PITA though to pull the heads! It only appears to be leaking on the driver side head (I don't have a cross-over in my dual exhaust), but I will probably replace both head gaskets while I'm in there since I put them in at the same time about 10 year ago.

Good luck! I just got done doing a rebuild of my 383 in my Monte due to a flat cam, (lack of the zink additive) didn't know about that one.

Re: *^%#* Head Gasket!

The same happened to my Blazer one year ago and it has done it one more time since. I only drive it around town an stay within 100 miles. Everything looks fine except for those two times. I am considering a ls conversion.

Would it be any easier to pull the front clip off, doesnt seem like alot of unbolting for the access you would gain. Gotta be a struggle to lift them over a fender on a lifted truck...maybe not, just a thought!

I feel your pain

Quaker State Defy. They add the zinc to it.

Re: *^%#* Head Gasket!

Update: Pulled the heads and found the faulty gasket on #7 cylinder. I don't like doing all of the work to pull the heads, but I like being able to find the exact cause of the problem.

Re: *^%#* Head Gasket!

Bentblazer - not really sure of the cause. I installed the heads about 10 years ago when I had a valve job done with proper bolt torque and pattern. The damage occurred in a spot where the water jacket is very close to the cylinder bore on the firewall side of the #7 cylinder. It appears as though the steel ring in the gasket at the leaking spot has some rust damage, so the water has been working its way out for a while. I will be getting the heads and block checked for warps and have them decked if needed.

Man that sucks Craig...but at least you found the problem, and know how to fix it. Glad it didn't happen at Brother's...
