Re: New engine build 406 SBC

FYI I am think 75 on the first stage ( 1st & 2nd gear) 125 on the second for 3/4 gearing. So 200 all in should work very well..

Have plans for the MSD power box to control all of my ign retard for the two nos stages, and one for crap gas if that happens. It will run up to 5 steps?? I have no idea why you would need that many.. Burn out limit, stage limit and top RPM limit... Maybe for bracket racing or something with the extra two.. Very cool unit really and bonus it will plug into my 6AL box!!!

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Going in my 62 "flying brick" I built this based on another build that had parts very close to this. It had a Comp Extreme engery cam, they set comp level at 9.5.1 and used a 200 CC runner head dual plane intake, They also swapped a single plane on the same built. With single plane it made mid 550 hp. Been a while since I read the write up. I have a cam that is made by howards that is almost spot on to the comp cam, but I am running the 220 heads with port work, and rasied the comp level to 11.1 .. SO I will be putting it on the drum vs the dyno and go from there. But I feel that with what I have it should go at least 550+ and really I never started out to reach a goal on the engine.

I know of another of these that was built and they ran a 850 carb with the 294 comp cam ( thats very close to mine) and it made either 592 or 602 I do not recall.. Not really into the numbers deal. The track time will tell the real story for me..

Either way I am sure it will be fun on the street or the track.

Super73 can you run this through your program for me.. Thanks

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

well had a small snag on the timing cover deal. But got it handled. The stock tin one was broken where the seal sits in. SO the new cast one created a bit of an issue with the cam button. But go it sorted out and dropped the engine in.. I like the slight rake to it. No for the plumbing, wiring etc.. HA HA getting there.. But with two feet of snow on the ground now , back to dealing with the cold.. It was 72 on sat when I dropped the engine in. Sunday morning back to the frozen stuff..

And all I'll say is if you had used a Cloyes Hex-adjust and Quick-buttom cover,,, you'd not have has tht issue. But you got it handled so kudos. When this insainity slows down we'll talk. But right now it's a then for some .

Nice , hope the drum has O2 sensors it will help with tuning . I think the crossbar 2 stages hit harder than a single bars plate . Seems like 150 & 150 hit harder than a single 300 if you know what i mean .

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

well have not gotten a lot further but have had to re do a few things. I had to replace all of the fuel system due to the push loc hose not being able to handle the fuel for extended time.. So that had to be removed and I bought just over 800 dollars worth of braided hose new fuel pump, billet reg's and blocks , new carb line as the billet bracket would not clear the new QF carb.. As well getting the front March pulley mocked up. to see where that will go. I have to bend up some new rear NOS lines as they are going to hit the MSD.. But hey once done it will all be worth it.

I will post up some pics of the new QF pump, and billet regs they are very nice.. For what they cost they should be LMAO

Marv as for the cover I know.. But I had the sheetmetal on the truck and had one day to get help to get that engine dropped into place. I got it handled but in hindsite the cast cover with the button built in would have made my life much easier for that set up

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

A bit more done on the fuel system and new WP installed. Getting there, got all but one of the hard line bent and installed. Had to form up a bracket to clear everything on the 1st stage fuel solenoid.

The braided money will be worth it . Take your time do it right and be done . Way better than doing it twice and paying for it twice IMO .

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Steve, one quick mention here I see from the pic. I don't care what radiator you put in there that 45° water outlet from March / Billet Specialities or whomever is going to be a MF'r and not work. Besides those things are STUPID expensive from slummit and jeggie. Here,, about 40% of the March and BilletSpecialities and the stupid thing FITS with a 15° outlet angle and is $32

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/afco-c...ngs,37386.html

not $60 and $70 like the Billet Specialities and March stuff .

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

HA HA well it runs great, now I drove the truck around the area ( with no glass in the cab) . The top rad hose worked great with my bargin t stat housing. All the NOS is plumbed, wired intot he cab, I have a few small things to complete. Then I am back to body work , block and paint. Our son is done with high shcool in 2 weeks and off to tech school so that has been the deal.

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

looks nice man. which school is your son going to attend. I am a graduate of wyotech here in sacramento. Its an okay problem just tell him stay focused in the books, because you only get out what you put into it. They glorify it alot on commercials and interviews its not all they say. But you can make the best of it. If you dont mind me asking about how much do you have just into the engine alone?? thinking of building a 406 or 434 wit that same block

Re: New engine build 406 SBC

Krass music school in AZ..

I would tell you that if you are starting from ground zero to not waste your time on these old style engines. A ls3 from the pick a part, with just a cam will build some killer power. With a CNC head job and a few extras it will out run this engine all day long and then some. I had my 383 blow up so I had a ton of parts to start with on this new build. No way would I invest in another engine like this. Not after having owned several stock and built LS engines..

My pick would be the ls3 with a 413 stroker kit middle of the road cam , simple single stage NOS kit and go have fun.. also PM sent
