Dana 60 carriers rear to front possible

Would like to know if anyone has any knowledge on this swap possibilty.

Can you take a 30 spline dana 60 rear posi carrier out of a 1970 diff and put the carrier in a 1986 dana 60 front 4x4 axle housing and just change the spider gears from the 30 spline rear to the 35 spline front. In essence can dana 60 front spider gears be swapped with earlier style year 30 spline spider gears.

That way I could have a maximum traction posi from the rear 1970 diff go into the 1986 era dana 60 4x4 front diff. Can it be done?

Would you be able to use ring and pinion also? As to change gear ratios to something different..say 4.10 from 4.56.

Reading some on the net it appears that f*rd dana 60 front used 30 spline spider on the inner from 74-77.

Looking for info on swapping spiders and carriers in all. What you know?

What Id like to hear is I can swap the carriers and maybe gears from the front to the rear with just using the front 35 spline spider gears....posi front for a dana 60 done cheap with parts I have is what I'm hoping.

im not sure what kind of posi unit you have, but i have Posi-Trac in the 1980 front dana 60 in my 72. if it is the same posi that is used on a 70 rear 60 then i think it would swap over easily, but im not very sure. i think you would have to use spiders from a 35 spline posi unit, not from your open carrier but ive never tried this. i got my posi from a crysler van semifloat 35 spline dana 60 that was just setting around our shop.

if you are trying to swap 4.56 gears on a 4.10 carrier it will not work, but if the gears with the posi are 4.56 then yes you can use them and be fine. there is a change on the carrier for gears that are 4.10 and numerically lower than the carrier for 4.56 and numerically higher.
hope this helps

Rod, you need the 35 spline side gears from another Powr-Lock (which is the Maximum traction option). You can't use regular spiders. You can use the side gears from a D70 powr-lock, or a D60 front powr-lock (both 35 spline).

Spicer sells a kit, iirc # 707074x that converts a 30 spline powr-lock to 35 spline, and its around $200 (its basically an entire new powr-lock except for the case halves).

like Ryan said, if you have 4.10 now and want 4.56, then you need a whole new powr-lock.
hope this helps

If it is a powr-lock, you should be able to get just the side gears for about $75. A friend done it last year for his front 60. You can't put 4.10 & numerically lower on a 4.56 carrier, but you can put 4.56 & numerically higher on a 4.10 carrier by using a spacer, or new "extra thick" gears.

You are probably right. I can't remember for sure, I have seen the spacer used, but I don't really like the idea. Looks like it could be problems for a lead foot.

Anyone need a powr-lock for a 70? it is out of the rear of an early '80s Dodge. I bought it on ebay for a 60, but when I got it, the ring gear didn't fit. The numbers verified it for a 70. Of course, I put the new clutches in before figuring this out.

The dana 60 has 4.56 now and the older 30 spline dana 60 has 4.10. My rear diff currently have 410 in the eaton. I was looking at swapping to the 4.10 in the front also. Figured I try to add the posi when I get in there.

Looks like it has possibilites by what I've read here. Thanks.
