Ok heres the deal, My 68 burb is running pretty warm and I'd like to cool it down some. I've already flused the radiator and it's nice and clean and everything seems to be working fine. So I was thinking that an electric fan would be a nice upgrade and would hopefully cool down the burb also. My questions are..... How hard is it to do this up grade? I would like to pull a fan out of another car/truck out of a junk yard and wanted to know what is a good rig to get a fan out of? will this keep the burb cool even while pulling a trailer of heavy load?

A fiend of mine pulled a dual fan set up out of a new small car that cooled his 454 while pulling a trailer. It worked great for him, but I cant remember what kind of car he got it from. Take your tape measure.

Well Im using the fans out of my 88 IROC on my TPI swap only because the PCM,relays etc are already wired for it.

If I were you I would go to the truck with a tape measure.
Take some length/depth etc and then haul down to the local auto parts store.

Most all of them sell eletric fans that will mount up universal to any radiator. Just get one big one or two smaller ones.
Get as much fan on ther as possible and then you wont have to worry with a shroud.
Just wire it where it will pull air in from the grill instead of push it and your home free.

My moms fan went out on her car and I fixed it using a universal eletric fan. Hell I just wired it in with the relay and it works just like the stock one did.

You can get a thermostat switch to turn the fans on and off at a preset temp as well.
I know that summit racing and jegs both sell one and it sure beats wiring it up with a switch you have to turn on and off

I integrated my electric fan into the original shroud, here's a pic... looks stock, bolted right up, tight to the radiator core, works great... cut a dime-sized hole in the top of the shroud to access the thermostat knob for adjusting when it turns on/off... I got it coming on at about 200 right now... everything is contained in/under the shroud for a clean look.

me and a buddy put 2 12 inch fans in his s10 with a350/th350, took a couple hours tops...was easy to do the actual install and the wiring wast too hard either,just need a relay like the ones you use for fog lights and a switch..or i think some fans come wth the wiring too, his didnt but it was easy to do, also i think you can run your fans off your heat sensor if u dont wanta switch...but im not too familliar with this so maybe double check with someone else

here's a pic of my fan, and radiator....It's from a 91 Lumina APV van.....I had to grind the little plastic tits off the radiator shroud so they wouldn't rub on the core, and made some spacers and drilled the top of the radiator frame and bolted in place...pretty easy to do, took me longer to find the spacers than it did to install the fan.

BTW, it's not exactly mounted in this pic, but you can get the general idea.

Two 14" Perma-Cool Fans in a aluminium shroud I made.One wired to a themostat threaded into the head and comes on at 185 degrees.Other fan comes on when A/C turned on and is also wired to an incab switch so I can turn it on and off when needed.

Is there anyone else that's viewed this thread that doesn't have an electric fan, but now wants one? All those cool (no pun intended) setups have me wondering why I haven't installed one yet. (I'd most likely go with 2 though, to keep that 406 cool)

Maybe I'll go dig my shroud out of the shed now, and see about installing one of those black magic fans, and see how it does.

just wondering, where did you get a thermostat switch that goes in the head? I have one in the rad that comes on when the rad gets to 185 but my temp guage says about 230 on the engine by then and thats too hot! it also only stays on for a very short time cause the air from the fan cools the switch right off before the motor really does. I have a manual switch wired in but it's a pain. Can you just buy the thermo switch somewhere? mine came in the wireing kit I got for my elec fans. That is one sweet setup you have there bobby!

Anyway I got the thermostat from Painless wiring.
I copied and pasted the add from Painless wirings cataloge

30102 / 30103
30103 - 185 degree on / 170 degree off
30102 - 200 degree on / 185 degree off

I got the one that hoes into the radiator but what I did is to strap it to the upper radiator hose with insuation foam tape coverd with electrical tape and is working fine. This was an adj. stat from Autozone for about $22. Ed ke6bnl

I stuck my probe in the cooling fin at the top left corner of the rad. RTVd the ends closed. Then adjusted it from there.

One thing I want to bring up about electric fans is they cant pull near the air a belt driven fan can(unless you got a really good one). Its OK as long as your moving. But get in stop and go traffic or work the engine hard at low speeds and watch the temps climb.
Electric fans can and do fail. I learned an almost very expensive lesson not to leave the engine running and walk off for a few minutes. My fan had quit and rad. boiled over. Shut it off before a serious overheat happend. Now I have two fans.
The reasons I went to an elec. fan was back in 91 I couldnt hardly find a 4x4 fan shroud and when I did it was way over $100. An electric fan was cheaper. The other reason was I stalled in deep water one time because the belt fan was throwing water back on the distributor. I figure I can turn an elec before I cross water and not have that problem.
Bottom line, elec fans are cool just watch you temps a lot closer at slow speeds.

Also 71402BB when is your burb running warm? Highway/City? or both.

PS I have a 71 402 sitting on an engine stand. Is it worth anything?
