what now- tick tick tick

on the first short road trip (150 miles) since the swap/assembly, my truck started ticking.

the background: it has a sb 350 (from a 72 donor) with 35k since the last rebuild. edlebrock cam & manifold, roller tip rockers, n'stuff.

the problem: lifter ticking.
I pulled the v-cover and found #3 intake rocker was loose. the nut was in the same location on the stud as the rest. I tightened the nut about 2 1/2 turns (3/4 past zero lash) to get the tapping to quiet but the nut is way down on the stud.

the question: did a lifter collapse? is it going to get noisy again? will I have to replace the lifter? and what other parts might get damaged if I wait?
please advise.
thanks
jones

take a look see if the stud pulled up on you. if thats the case, you can probably get an oversized stud to press back in,or go to a screw in stud(with no nutface). good luck.....Al

Another option is if it has pressed in rocker studs it may be pulling out. Is the stud rasing up higher than the rest?

That would be my guess if the rocker and push rod are fine and riding where they should.

If it runs smooth, you dont have a wiped lobe. could be the nut just backed off(sometimes they wont hold position if they have been off/on several times). you might also check the push rod for a chipped end..........Good luck......Al

Pull the push rod out and see if it is bent.
If it runs fine, i doubt the cam is wiped. Although the Eldebrock cams are known a littel for going flat prematurley though.

Check to see that the top of the valve stem didn't pop off. Valve's are actually made of three different metals and are put together with some kind of chewing gum or something. I once found something that looked like a watch battery sitting in the oil on a 350 head. Couldn't figure it out but a lifter did get loose and noisey. What happens is this top of the valve actually falls off and then you have about 1/8" clearance that doesn't belong. You can crank down on the rocker adjustment nut to quiet it down but you may also start to cause wear on the valve spring rim in the process. If it came off check your oil galley on the top of the head and/or measure the valve stem height when at reast with another valve---must measure intakes to intakes--exhausts to exhausts for proper reference. If that valve is shorter, you know what happened before worrying about cams, studs coming up, etc. You can run it like that or could weld a little top to it ----- best fix is to replace. Good luck---Huck
