Van Tilt Column Questions

I have found a local ad for a GM Van tilt column. What kind of modifications would have to be done to fit this into my 72. Is the wiring plug the same? If it has a shifter what would I have to do to remove it because i am going with a B&M floor shifter. And finally what's the difference between these columns then then stock truck and aftermarket ones.

Re: Van Tilt Column Questions

The part number for the adapter is 1894851 you GM dealer can get them, less than 10$. Someone on the board may have one to sell.

Here is the link that I used to mod mine.

Re: Van Tilt Column Questions

The van tilt needs to be a late 60's to early/mid 70's without the keylock on the column. The Van units are longer then the truck columns so the lower shaft will need to be shortened. The Van unit has the neutral safety switch located where the column come close to the pedal mount so it would have to be removed---you could rewire this to the floor shifter with some creative tweeking. You can get flat connector to curved connector from GM. Modifying the column for floor shift would require either cutting and smoothing the upper cover (shifter, indicator, pointer holder) or replacing this with the floor shift pieces (you'll never find them!!). Alternative is an aftermarket column from Ididit which will set you back around $400.
I would do the Van thing and keep it simple/cheap. Just be sure to position the steering wheel to allow for thanksgiving dinner impacts! hehehehe

Re: Van Tilt Column Questions

if it is an early van unit, there will be 2 locations for the neutral safety switch... but you aren't going to need it anyways, just remove it and forget about it. (Hooking the NSS on your floor shifter is on you... if you go to a track that goes by NHRA rules, you'll get kicked out without it) The early van units have the 1/2 moon turn signal switch plug too.
How much are they asking for this column if I may ask... They aren't really worth a WHOLE LOT unless redone and real nice.

Re: Van Tilt Column Questions

The column is from an 82. I haven't phoned the guy yet so I don't know what kind of shape it is in. He's asking $140 cnd. for whuch is around $120 usd. I'm still wondering if I should go with this column or an ididit or flaming river column.

Re: Van Tilt Column Questions

there were only a hand full of 82's without the ignition switch... make sure this is one of them. The *normal* 82 column will be a bit of a PITA to install.
120 isn't too bad if it is decent to nice.
