`67 ashtray question

Are the`67 ash trays unique?I have one and was wondering.

my 68 doesnt seem to extend as far as some of the later ones. it also looks shorter from front to back.

I do know that the 72 ash tray frame is welded in, and I have seen some others that are bolted in. Are they the earlier ones?

it seems I too might have a 67 ash try, it's not quiet like my other's.

In both of my 67s the ashtrays didnt have rollers, they just slide in a track. I have seen 68 and newer pickups with rollersto slide on.

I have a 67 pickup & can't seem to get a ash-tray that fits

The one I got with it doesn't have any rollers & the slide area is curved (it doesn't fit at all)
The other one I got has some ball-bearings on a roller piece & it Will go in, but not correctly (I have to beat it in)

So what is different about my 67

67 is a one year piece
68 - 70 another model
71 - 72 a third version.

Thanks Andy and all others.I knew the`67 had a unique dash,but someone told me`68s had the same ashtray.So,it`s the 68-70s that have the rollers.I`ll be selling mine in the parts section,unless someone pms me from seeing it here.Which is why we must subscribe to make mention of items we wish to sell.

I had a '67 Suburban and the ash tray used a plastic slide. The one on my '68 Stepside had the steel track and ballbearing rollers. The ash tray in my '71 GMC also has plastic sliders. I always assumed it was a Standard/Deluxe situation. But maybe GMC used the older parts up after they were obsolete on the Chevy line?

The 71/72s went back to sliders.Maybe...the Suburban had one of those in it?
The`67 ash tray face has a less raised rim around the outer edge,too.

Well, I got a rollerball ashtray for $10 out of a junkyard a couple of years ago. (NFC what year the donor was, it was just a cab). Since my 112# Belgian Shepherd stepped on the '71 Jimmy's extended ashtray and broke the track, I was thinking of mounting the '68 style. Will it fit?

the answer is already in this thread... but no, the ash tray from a 68 will not slide right into a 71.

Right. What I meant was ... could the '68 style ash tray carrier and ash tray assembly bolt into a '71 dash? Or is the '71 spot-welded in and some drill-surgery may be necessary?

Yes, you can do that. A member sold me a chrome ash tray out of a 72, and I told him I needed the track assembly also. (his was bolted in for some reason) So I drilled out the spot welds and bolted the 72 slider in place of my 70 roller.
Honestly though... the rollerss bo make a little more noise and seound less refined... however, I personally prefer the ease of the roller ash tray over the stubborn slide on the later one with slider bushings.

We`ve all heard this one:The LMC catalog lists the ashtray as the same part,67-72.
Prolly haven`t heard this one:Everyone swapped-in the roller-types back in the day because when we,I mean,they were sucking on a roach and their fingers started to burn they could get the ashtray open real quick and dump the roach so their track changin' finger could still repeat "Smoke on the water" or "Ironman" ten times cuz it sounded so kewl.

I liked "Fresh Cream" from Creams' first album... a '67 tune to rock in a '67 rig.
But we digress: I think the '68/Rollerball type ash tray is a superior design, and would possibly support the weight of a goofy and hyper shepherd dog! Also if you lube the rollerball type with white lithium grease, they don't rattle as much.
I don't smoke, so my ash tray becomes the "small parts/ carwash token drawer."

Depends on how easy you think drilling out spot welds from upside down under the dash is.

I had an ash tray out of a 67 and I put it in my 69 dash, I was in a real "mood" when I did it and I felt that there was no reason it shouldnt go into place. So now I have a 67 ash tray stuck pretty good in a 69 dash. Im sure I can get it out with a few good tugs, but I use it as a reminder that force doesnt always make things fit properly.

For whatever reason my spot welds were not very strong. A little tug busted the spot welds. Looks like the factory did me a favor with their shotty welds that time.
