You might wanna check the inside of your seat

So i was sitting there in the garage on the seat out of my 68 working on making a patch panel when my nephew notice in the backside of the seat there was a paper which he thought was a reciept for something. I got up and looked and it was the original build sheet/option sheet for my truck from 1/16/68 stuck between the springs and the padding in the backside of my seat. I fished it out but its brittle so i had to tape a few spots back together but i'm going to get it laminated. It's pretty cool to see what all my truck came with from the factory and sort of disappointing to see what all options that the previous owners have removed. Does anyone know if that paper was supposed to be there?

I have heard that it is not uncommon to find them there. Nice surprise when you do find one.

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

I think all trucks build sheets are located in the seat. Some expert will chime in.

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

yep, that's the most common place for them. mine had one in the bottom and one in the back. even the GM car line had them stuck in the back seat and sometime the seat bottom as well.

as the vehicle was rolling down the line (most likely at final inspection) the inspector would basically check the sheet and either approve or reject. they would then insert the build sheet in the seat and that was that.

build sheets are always interesting to look at. it will tell you absolutely everything about the car/truck, engine, tranny, options, rear end gears....even if they installed hold down brackets for rail travel.

nice find. take care of those things, 'cause that just may bring you a few extra dollars down the road if you ever sell her.

My Marauder's was in the frame of the back seat so it wasn't just a GM thing.

so true. forgot that a friend found the build sheet of his 70 Mach 1 in the back seat as well.

now that I'm thinking of it, Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth did the same (I believe?)

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

i was just looking at it and i noticed it has an option marked down that i thought was only an option in 67. It is the panoramic rear window. I thought that came standard on 68 and up. Also what is the Custom C&C Equipment?

comfort and convience package. just a stab in the dark.
as for the cab, is it an early year 68? may explain the "optional" panoramic rear window?

nice CG. looks like your rig stayed fairly close to home. my 69 came from the Fremont plant as well. do you have the smog taps on the manifolds. I know they were there for a reason, but can't figure it out. all the California smog devices have long since been pitched for my baby....

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

I have a 72 C/20 that my dad bought new that has the build sheet, sales sheet, the plastic packet that the owners manual come in with all the original booklets that come with it, and i have driven it sense it was new. Its all tore apart now trying to get a face lift done on it. Living on a farm all its life was hard on it.

That's cool that you found it. I'd check my seat but they are from a 90s suburban.

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

Keep in mind that there is no guarantee your truck will have a build sheet. There was no policy that said the build sheet had to stay with the truck.

The build sheet is the "recipe" for the truck as it travels down the assembly line. When the truck got to the last station, many of the sheets wound up on the factory floor, as opposed to in the truck.

On my 1970's Pontiac Grand Ams, they were mostly on the tops of the gas tanks. I have also found them under the carpet, behind the door panels, above the glove box liner, etc. Basically anywhere they could be "hidden".

Also, once you remove the build sheet and it is exposed to daylight, the ink fades pretty fast. Do something to protect it as soon as you can.

There were 3 build sheets under my seat. 2 were for my truck and the other wasn't. Weird eh?

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

in my old 68 vw bug I found an OLD bag of mary jane. you never know what you`ll find. I wish I had inspected my seat before I got rid of it now. I bet the check sheet for my truck was still there too.

Sweet find! I won't be as lucky, as the PO put a different seat in my truck...

Re: You might wanna check the inside of your seat

I have found build sheets behind the factory carpeted fibre board that covers the gas tank on the A50 optioned bucket seat trucks. I also found one behind the pass. side door panel on my 71 Cheyenne Super K20, tucked in there with it was a factory assembly line change order sheet containing a few last minute changes by the guy that ordered the truck new, it is dated march 3rd of 71 and it has the initials of the original purchaser ok'in the changes. I am glad that extra document was still with the truck after all these years, Cb
