Suburban Build

Well, now that I'm starting to move a little bit on my Suburban build, I figured I'd start a build thread for it. It's an '87 V20 that I've named "The Big, Scary Burb" or "BSB." It's going to be a very slow build, since work is very slow right now, but it will get done eventually. Right now I've got the back end tore apart and I need to get some replacement panels before I can go any further. I'm hoping that work picks up enough in the next couple of weeks that I can get that done before the end of the month. Anyways, enough with the words, on to a couple of pics.

As you can see in the pics, it's a bit rough. It has a 6.2/THM400/NP208 with a toasted Gear Vendors OD. I have some pretty big plans for it. It's going to end up being my tow rig and semi-daily driver. For the driveline, I plan on going with a well built 6.2, an SM465 with a Ranger OD box, NP205, D60 front and D70HD rear. Body I'm going to leave pretty much as is, little things here and there like marker lights and mirrors. Looking to put 3/4 ton leaves in the rear with airbag helpers (has one ton leaves now). Plan for the interior is a big rig theme. Like I said, I have some big plans for it, and it's going to be painfully slow, but it should pay off in the end. Hopefully sometime this week I can get some new pics that show my current progess.

Re: Suburban Build

Nice, I've always wanted a dually burb myself.
What are you thinking for the interior big rig theme?
I still have a ton of parts laying around from upgrading my tractor interior over the past couple years.

Thanks. I'm just thinking about some subtle features like a little diamond tufting on the door panels and stuff. I know the diamond tufting probably isn't the most popular thing ever, but it'll work into the theme perfect, and I think I can fit it into the 73-91 Burb interior pertty nicely too, without it being gaudy or over-done. I'm also looking at different steering wheel options (will probably just get an 88-94 wheel though). Planning on re-doing the indicator lamps in the cluster to be a bit more HD style too. Just small stuff like that here and there.

Re: Suburban Build

Sounds like a it'll be a nice interior.

I'm tempted to redo a bunch of the switches in my Burb with the long chrome toggles like I have in my tractor and use chrome trim rings around the gauges as well when I redo my dash.
Not to mention the CB and VHF radios mounted in my overhead shelf similar to my tractor as well.

I'm not yet sure what I want to do with switches. I would put a CB in an overhead console, but there's already a perfect hole with brackets in my dash for it under the radio location.

Re: Suburban Build

Well, it's been a long, long time, but with what's happened over the past few months and with Spring creeping in, I'm pretty sure this build is going to start moving.

So here's the update:
Most importantly, I was able to get myself a full time job. I also found an awesome deal on a 4-53T Detroit from a late 70's/early 80's MD GM that I'm going to pick up once the weather breaks. The same guy I'm getting the engine from, fortunatly, also has a number of Spicer 3053's from military surplus (transmission used in the Duece and a half). So, the new plan for the drivetrain is the 4-53T bolted to the Spicer with a divorced passenger drop 205 transfer case and a D60 front and D70HD rear with 3.54:1 axles. I was also considering running an Allison AT545 (he has a number of those too) behind the 4-53T with a set of 3.07 D44 front and D70HD rear axles, but I think I'm going to stick with the Spicer/3.54 for simplicity. Anyways, I'm excited to finally be able to offer an update on this, and I'm really looking forward to getting this build moving along.

Re: Suburban Build

Well I brought the engine and transmission home today. Hopefully I can get pictures some time.
