Help me pick a distributor

I don't know which one I need. I am going with MSD but wasn't sure if I should get mechanical advance or vacuum.

I am building a 468 ci motor for my truck. This truck is going to just be a weekend type toy. Not a daily driver. I am going with a Comp Cams XE274H cam. If is fairly choppy so I didn't know if a vacuum advance would be right for me.

I found a 6AL Ignition box and an MSD pro-billet distributor with mech advance for a pretty good price. I started to jump on them but I thought I better ask you guys first. Thanks for the help guys!!!

Imho this is all I would use no spark boxes needed.

Re: Help me pick a distributor

Pertronix igniter III has the Rev limiter and the multi spark (through the entire RPM range) built into the distributor cap all for about $230. I love mine.

Re: Help me pick a distributor

So should I stick with vacuum advance for something I am driving on the street?

Re: Help me pick a distributor

The distributor will have both vacuum and mechanical advance . You need mechanical advance unless you plan on running a retard box and a bunch of other electronics. Any distributor will have mechanical advance.

Wanted to bump this again to see if anyone had any experience with the street/strip version of this DUI distributor.

Re: Help me pick a distributor

I have not read anything bad about DUI dist. In fact, i have seen them used by a lot of Engine builders, David Vizzard as one. He swares by them. But, no rev limiter or multi spark, just a bigger spark.

Re: Help me pick a distributor

You can order a built in rev limiter for them. What is multispark?

Built in as in non adjustable? Its fine. A multi spark means you have up to 3 sparks on each cylinder per stroke. The MSD series has 3 up to 3000rpm's. The Pertronix has 2-3 depending on rpm through the entire rpm range. This creates a much better/efficient burn which in turn makes more power.

Is this the one you have?

I am assuming it has a place to hook up a tach? How do you adjust the rev-limiter? Any special plug wires or plugs I should run with it? What is a Hall Effect trigger style as oppose to magnetic?

I did not get the HEI one. I got the one with the points box. It does have a tach hook up. Adjusting it is easy. Go to Pertronix.com and watch their video on the Igniter III. Hall Effect Trigger/sensor is a different way of the spark being ignited or for the spark to be sent because the rotation of the crank.

Re: Help me pick a distributor

Thanks for the advice Ripdog28, I think I will give the Pertronix a try. It sound pretty good to me and I like the price. I just read through your build thread. I like your truck man. I hope mine is making somewhere close to as much power as yours when I get it together.
