Stock Horn or Aftermarket?

I've tried searching for this, but haven't found anything definitive.

Question 1 answered1. I'm a little confused by what is stock because LMC Truck lists a high and a low. Is the high and low contained in the same component or are there two horns in your engine compartment? If two, where are they located?Answered

2. Are you using the stock horn(s) or aftermarket? If aftermarket, where did you get it and was it simple to install?

I don't really need anything fancy, just effective and easy to install. My Painless wiring kit has one wire that goes to the horn. I want to make my solution as simple as possible so your thoughts, opinions, and pictures if you have them!

3. I have an aftermarket steering wheel with a tab and wire. How do I hook up an aftermarket steering wheel to a stock tilt column (van tilt in my case)?

Any help you can provide with any of these three would be appreciated!

the easy way is to fabricate a jumper wire on the horn wire in your harness// thats the way the factory did it


very important is the mounting of the horn on the core support as the connection there is your ground for the horns

Thanks Stocker! Do you know if the other horn is in the same place on the passenger side or is it elsewhere?

Actually they are both on the drivers side.... the green wire going to the left is heading towards the drivers fender. It goes to the horn which is mounted a few inches from the one pictured.

I have an old Grant wheel on my truck... it came with an adapter which is needed to mount the wheel and for horn operation. If you don't already have an adapter, you will probably need one.

Horn operation is fairly simple. When the wire at the steering wheel is grounded, it operates a relay under the dash (you can hear it click as you ground the wire). When that relay operates, it sends -12vdc to the horns via the green wire. The circuit is completed by the horns being grounded through their mounting bolts to the core support, which is why Cliff said it needs to be properly grounded.

Yeah, mine came with an adapter so its mounted. I just didn't see a way to integrate the horn setup with the old column. I'll take some pics with the wheel off this week that may help. I have a Painless wiring setup so no relay now. Just one green wire from fuse box to horn mounting location up in driver's side core support. Thanks!

I bought one from a modern chevy truck and installed it indise the left fender it is pretty loud and it is concealed.

Was it difficult to wire up? Was it just the one wire with body as ground like the older units? Any idea about what year? Thanks!

Still looking for horn pics and details on how easy it was to install what you have. Also, here are pics of my horn button. I'm not sure how I make a button that works by wire work with the stock turn signal switch to operate the horn. It looks like in the stock column the horn is activated by pushing the brass? pin. Not sure if that is what operates the stock horn or not.

On both of my trucks, I have the OEM horns hooked up via the horn button on the steering wheel. I also have air horns on both trucks with a horn button mounted under the dash. On my CST I also have a wolf whistle and a cable operated horn that sounds like a cow/bull. I guess I like horns.

I bought all the aftermarket horns from WOLO.

My CST has an aftermarket wheel and my C20 has a stock type wheel. Maybe someone can post up a picture of the stock setup. Both of my horn hookups in the wheels were simple....sorry I don't recall the details, I'm old and it has been a while since I messed with them.

Ha! No problem. Yeah, I know someone on here has the pics and explanation that will help me convert what I have to work with the tilt column. Thanks for the info!
