'72 c-20 rat build

my regular truck is a 2000 k2500... but it's too new. i had been keeping my eyes open for a 67-72 that could pull my car trailer. i ended up finding this bad boy on craigslist....

1972 c-20 camper special, 402, 4 speed.
everything appears to be original and the truck is relatively unmolested. someone went crazy with some white spraypaint under the hood...

it also has been rigged with some kind of dump bed setup. you can see the strange rear bumper setup designed to clear it... that has to go away in order for me to install a hitch.

i've decided to go with the admittedly-somewhat-played-out semi-gloss black with red accents. inside has been painted blue, i intend to change that to red, and go with red under the hood. the front clip has been dinged and damaged, so once i have the parts i need, i will hopefully have something that looks similar this when i'm done...

Nice, think about becoming a premium member. Its well worth the cost with the added benefit of being able to sell items you don't need.

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

picked up a 68 front clip off craigslist. i prefer that style hood and grill, soooo..... i was able to salvage those parts off the clip, but sadly the fenders and rad support were shot, as well as all the chrome trim. hood and grill are now out being sandblasted. i'll have to bite the bullet and buy repop fenders and a rad support... :/

the other hood and grill i bought are back up on CL where hopefully someone else can use them.

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

here's another picture showing the wonky rear bumper setup... ugh, some people's children...

this morning i finished stripping the interior. hopefully going to paint it on tuesday or so, depending how crazy i get with filling in holes and modifying stuff... very tempted to smooth out the entire center of the dash and relocate the heater controls and ign switch, delete the ashtray and radio opening...

new grille is back from being sandblasted and painted with masterseries paint... still waiting on hood... new fenders have been ordered and should arrive early next week...

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

Yikes! Bet that took a while! Looks good though. Yeah I was gonna suggest that about the needles (forgot). Get ya some flouresent red brush on. It's pretty cheap on Ebay. I'm gonna be redoing my gauges in whiteface with orange pointers the centers will be black. That setup will definately go good with your red/flat black scheme for sure!

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

so i picked up a bowtie for the grille and some hood letters from forum member dishow from her thread here... they arrived today (super quick, thanks!), landed in the powdercoating oven around 8pm... and now they're ready to go...

i may put a flat black shadow on the hood letters like i did on the bowtie, we'll see...

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

Good progress! Are you gonna paint those inner fenders? Might as well, while you got it apart! I know it's a lot of work, especially if you're doing it by yourself. Kinda looks like someone threw a grenade under the hood of your truck! Are you going 67 or 68 (with or without side markers)?

Re: '72 c-20 rat build

yes, i am going to paint the inner fenders, i just wanted to get everything assembled as much as possible before i shoot them to reduce chances of making scratches when putting stuff together - mostly because i don't want to give rust a place to get started on the new fenders. everything is getting a coat of silver MasterSeries silver paint (similar to por-15, but better, it's what the grille is painted with in the pics) to protect from rust. i still have some repair work to do to the inner fenders anyway, you can see in the first pic, the RF inner fender has a hole at the top of it where it bolts to the outer fender.

you can't see it in these pics, but the drip rails have all been painted with masterseries as well. someone did work on the truck before me and bondoed up some rust spots around the front window frame, but never fixed the leaks at the drip rails that were allowing the water in! so i have plenty more work to go before i can think about the final coat of paint.

decided to go with side markers since the bed has them....

it used to look like a white paint bomb went off under there, so i think this may be an improvement lol.
