new truck? diesel guys

i have been thinkin of tradin my 05 regular cab sierra in on a 2wd ex cab diesel. what kind of gas mileage are yall gettin with the diesels. thats probably going to be the deciding factor. right now im lookin at an 04 and 06.

Being its a 2wd and if you drive in moderation (no hot rodding ) You should pull 20 pretty easy.

If you want a GM, get the 06-07 Duramax for the best engine (22-24 mpg). Ford, get the 6.4 litre. With the proper tuner, they are awesome (20-26 mpg tuned only). The new 6.7 ford has plenty of power but mileage...not so much. The 5.9 -24V Cummins can be jacked up for more power, but the 6.7 Dodge with the proper tuner has been known to do over 1000 km per tank (tuned). being from Canada, we do not have strict pollution laws as yet, so we can really get power and mileage out of diesels without too much hassel.

yeah ford just isnt consistant enough with their motors for me. 7.3 was a good motor from ford but since then. they havent had much luck. imo. the 06-07 is actually the range that im lookin at. im sold on gettin one. now i just need to find the right one. any issues with them that i might need to look into? i mostly hear about injectors stickin. but thats pretty random.

That is one of the problems with the Duramax. To change the injectors is brutally expensive in labour alone. Other issues are bad carbon buildup on the valves from the EGR. The steering was weak on them also.

Just have fun with those repair bills. To me a diesels not really worth it unless you USE it.

the truck that i have been lookin at has actually had the steering shaft (if i remember right) replaced like 4 or 5 times. no sign of injector failure thou. wich i guess is good and bad. as far as the use. i dont tow every day or anything like that but i do tow. and as it is right now my sierra SUCKS at towin. the thing is just to light. and itll get around 11 mpg while im doin it. i have a few other trucks that i tow and bein in the military i have to move just about every 3 years. in that aspect havin a diesel would be awsome.

Do it man. I can't speak much on a 2wd. I just bought a 05 3500 Dually Duramax Crew Cab and I'm getting around 15-16 in town and around 19 on the highway. It's a big ass rig and getting decent mileage. Thats stock with no tuners. My buddy has almost the same truck with intake, exhaust and tuner and he's getting around 25 highway and 18-19 in town.

If you decide to go Duramax. The LBZ motor (06/07) is the best motor. The LLY (04.5-06) is a good motor as well.

wow. thats as good as my super light reg cab sierra! the truck i was lookin at was pretty nice but it had some things wrong with it that i didnt like. the headliner for starters. 17k on a truck that head liner better not have any frigen staples holdin it together! im still on the look out but i might have missed my window. my wife doesnt want another vehicle around right now.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I don't know much of anything about diesels. I was looking at an 02 2500hd crew cab with a duramax that has 137,000 miles on it, is that more towards the low or high range in mileage?

as far as for the year of the truck or the life of the motor? the new average mileage used by insurance companies is 15000 miles a year so for that year its pretty much right on for an 02. diesels last alot longer than gas motors. i always hear people say "100k? its just barely broken in!"

Ive had two of LB7 Duramax's one and 01' and an 02' .. my 01 got 25 on the highway doing 80ish. my 02 gets around 17 but I'm running 38 15.50 on this one

the Duramax I have right now has 167k and running strong and my old Duramax had 330k running an edge chip and a lot of mods and it was still a champ until it got stolen ..

I have an 05 extended cab Duramax 2500 HD and I pull a 12000 lb fifth wheel. I get an average of 10-12 miles per gallon towing and 21 empty. Best truck I have ever owned.

I have a 2004 crew cab, regular box, 4WD with the lly duramax. Bought it new 7 years ago and it now has 165,000 kms on it.

Running 120 km/h down the highway empty it will get 20 mpg. If I slow down to 110 km/h it probably increases to 21.5 mpg. Last summer we did a vacation through British Columbia and down to Oregon. The speed limit in the National Parks in BC is 90 km/h. We were on vacation and I took my time that day, probably drove 90 - 100 km/h all day and got 25 mpg. All imperial gallons though.

I pulled a 28ft holiday trailer from Edmonton AB to Vancouver BC with it and got 16.5 mpg. Pulling at around 100 km/h and the dry weight of this trailer was only 5000 lbs, so probably 6000-6500 going down the road.

Great truck for pulling. I am not crazy about the ride with it being a 3/4 ton, 4WD. Really wish that 1/2 ton with the 4.5 Duramax would have come together.......

Oh yeah, these figures are based on summer diesel. Probably not a concern where you live but up here in the Great White North in the winter the diesel is changed so it will not gel at cold temperatures. With winter diesel I can see a 3 - 4 mpg drop.

I had an 01 3500 cummins 2wd 6spd 214k miles it got about 20mpgs average and 14-18 towing a 20ft bobcat trailer with my suburban on it and it didnt notice the weight i loved the truck never should have sold it and now looking for another, my friend has a 2000 something duramax and as much as I like chevy he's had nothing but problems had to spend 1k on the injectors and harness or something, the whole front end needs rebuilt transfer case is junk and the motor pumps oil on the ground like rain my cousin also has a duramax hasn't had problem with his though
