4x4 Stk. to Auto ?

Finally was able to find the TH350/np-205 combo I've been looking for to replace my sm465/np-205 set-up. Thanks to coops714x4 for putting me onto LINELOCK for his combo and then HeavyMetalChevy for stepping up to help in transporting this from Nevada to Kansas. That's why I love this board so much, guys are always willing to help out another truck nut. Before I get started need a couple questions answered. Not at all familiar with auto
4x4's so here goes:

1. Is there a differance in the automatic linkage from the frame to the trans in a 4wd setup vrs. a 2 wd setup? I have most of the linkage from a '70 3/4
2wd sitting here from a parts truck.

2. I need the flex-plate/starter ring for the th350, is the starter the same between 2wd and 4wd. My starter bolts to the bell housing with 2 bolts at the front on the bottom and 1 bolt from the back all horizontal and not vertical.

3. No differance in front or rear driveshaft length from std. to auto? Is the driveshaft yokes the same front and rear from std. to auto?

4. Cross members differant? Have a auto 2wd trans crossmember on my parts truck. I know the 4x4 engine cradel or crossmember is differant.

Any help or tips here guys is much appreciated. I'm sure I will have more questions down the road as this all comes together.

Re: 4x4 Stk. to Auto ?

I can only answer one of your questions as I have a manual truck that I added auto to. The frame bracket will work from a 2wd truck, but you will have to drill holes and mount it. The shift linkage that goes from the column to the frame mounted bracket is too short from a 2wd truck as the engine is located in a different spot. I lengthened mine about 2 inches and made it work.

Gene, thanks for the reply. Can you explain a bit further on the lengthing of the linkage thing? What frame bracket are you referring to? Just where or what portion needed to be lengthened? Not at all familiar with the auto linkage as I've had my 4x4 std. trans since the mid 80's. Like to cover all the bases on this swap before I get to a problem.

The linkage that needs lengthened is the one that goes from the column to the frame bracket. The bracket is riveted to the frame and it is just beside the transmission and the linkage pivots on a rod that protrudes from it.

Your referring to the rod like linkage I take it? Not sure I have that on my '70 3/4 parts truck. Will have to look, I know the bracket is attached to the frame, that may be all that is there.

Re: 4x4 Stk. to Auto ?

All of the factory 4X4 AT linkage is different that 2WD due to the enging sitting much further back than 2WD. I suppose you could modify a 2WD set but it would be much easier to find a factory 4X4 setup.

Along with the flexplate you will need the flexplate to crank bolts, torque converter bolts, Yes the AT starter is different than the 4spd one.

The transfer case cross members are the same between AT and 4spd.

You will also need an AT steering column, transmission cooler lines and a radiator with internal cooler or an aftermarket external cooler, change out your underdash wiring harness or modify to include a neutral safety switch and relocate the backup light switch wiring. (if your not leary of digging into wiring its a fairly simple thing to do).

You will also need to plug the old 4spd shifter hole in the high hump, or swap it out with one from an AT 4x4 truck.

I am not 100% positive on the same driveshaft length. the yolks are the same if the AT setup you have is 1/2 ton.. 3/4 tons used a larger rear yoke and U-joint.

I bolted a frame bracket on and lengthened my column to frame bracket linkage rod by about an inch. I didnt have any luck finding a setup from a 4x4 truck and because I had the setup from my 2wd it made sense to modify mine. I cut the linkage rod and welded in a section the same diameter ground down the welds and painted it.

Hmm lol, I did a search on auto shift linkages and your ad came up. I dont think you had these listed when I was needing one? I agree, getting a set from a 4x4 truck is a better idea, and yours is a good deal!

I think I'm going with the Lokar shift cable, it seems to be affordable and easy to install, and mikes bump and grind garage here on the board sells them.
