Well, my 78 don't have a 96 in it, but it does have a 454, and it's the same size on the outside as a 96. No, you shouldn't have to do anything to the firewall to make that 396 fit.

My 72 K-10 has a 454 in it and has a 2 or 3 inch body lift on it and the firewall was cut up. It's still a tight fit. I've heard that some just drop right in and others require modifications.

I would like to see 4x4 pics also.

The big blocks fit in the 2wd's of that generation no problem.
My 69 Longhorn came with a 396 and my 72 Longhorn was delivered wth a 402.
