swaping in a dana 60

I finally made time to work on my truck a little. Its an 83 diesel suburban that I took the 6.2 and auto tranny out and put a 93 6.5 turbo diesel and nv4500 tranny in. I pulled the full float 14 bolt outa the truck and re mounted the spring mounts and got that in. Now onto the front.... I traded a pretty much scrapped out, dont owe me nothing, old truck for what I believe to be a ford dana 60 front (ball joint) dont matter to me because I need a driverside axle to match my 93 drivetrain and this truck wont be a rockcrawler. So I think its a dana 60 and would like some help to verify that and help me with brake options and what not. I was told but its 4.10 gears so it convienently matches my rear axle too. Heres some pictures of the axle and the codes i found on it.

I believe it says 44 60F

35733 or 35783 have to look in the daylight again it was getting late on me and I set it ouside with the skid steer before i looked at the numbers closer.

and I pulled the calipers and rotors off the 93 just in case i could get them to work on this axle. One side of my ford axle has a braket and rotor but no caliper. also wondering if for now my stocker 1/2 ton ones on my burban will work with a braket just to get it moble for painting and stuff...

I sandblased the calipers quick and put a little paint on them to clean them up a little

Any help is much appreciated!!! Im very mechanically inclined but I work on farm equiptment for a living so Im learning the automotive stuff as I go especially on this project!

Re: swaping in a dana 60

It looks like a Dana 44 to me. Dana 60 should have studs on one side of the spring plate. If it is a 60, Ford changed to a ball joint in the later years. Not as strong as the kingpin in my opinion.

Re: swaping in a dana 60

looks like a 44 to me also. those axle shafts look small to me. you def can tell a 60 from a 44 by the axles and the ring and pin gears

Re: swaping in a dana 60

That says "44 6CF". That is a Dana 44. Cover, casting, and axle tubes are too small to be a Dana 60.

Hope you didn't pay much for it.

^ Is that the same as high pinion? ^

I agree,that's definitely a Dana44. That's what the "44" stands for.

Re: swaping in a dana 60

Those aren't 60 calipers either. Take a pic of the spring mount. A GM 60 has studs on the passenger side on the inner side of the mount. Only uses 1 U-bolt on that side.

Re: swaping in a dana 60

Well,we've established it's a Dana44 and now the question is brakes. If you don't have any parts at hand to try to fit up,I think the easiest route would be locate the Ford parts and go with bot-on. GM parts may very well fit,but if you have to buy to try it's not worth the risk.

Re: swaping in a dana 60

i believe the ford dana 44 use a 5 bolt on spindle. and chevy use 6 bolt spindle. and i believe the spindals are different. i would run ford stuff. 8 lug pattern is the same and everything will work right for you.
