61 k10 hub free wheel question

new to old 4x4's--on my 61 when you unlock the hubs, the inner locking ring becomes loose (sloppy). locked up they are tight. it looks like a o-ring or maybe two on the inside of the locking ring (knob) if not o-rings what holds them in in free wheel? as of now they could fill up with grime--dirt--ect. thanks in adv.
