71 Bronco help

I am going to be rebuilding my 71 bronco for my wife after i complete the suburban.....

does anyone else have a bronco or any experience or knowledge?

i am thinking about swapping from a 302 to a straight six.
dont know the benefits of one over another (300, 200, 170)

this is it currently but will eventually look like this one from "Overhaulin"

Re: 71 Bronco help

That's a pretty desirable little truck you have there. There is a lot of repop stuff for them, too (almost like an early Mustang). I've had a couple of them, but they were all flips; I never kept one or did much to them. I think the 302 would be a little more desirable over a 6. I would keep that if it were me.

If you do decided to go the inline 6 route, you can't go wrong with a 300. IMO one of the best motors ford put out.

Re: 71 Bronco help

do you think a 300 six with stock fuel injection would get any better mileage?

and what about the 170 or 200 i thought those were famous for fuel economy

Re: 71 Bronco help

Decent mileage in a light car like a Falcon or Mustang. Heavy Bronco? Forget it..just build it to be fun and keep the 302.

Re: 71 Bronco help

I always thought a 5.0 HO would be cool in an early Bronco, especially with an AOD or something similar.

Re: 71 Bronco help

I have owned two 90s f150s one was a 300 one was a 302 mileage difference was maybe 5mpg if that.If your looking max mpg a 4bt cummins will get it but its as heavy as a big block so off road its front end heavy.

Re: 71 Bronco help

Have you thought about a diesel tho?A friend of mine has a 79 bronco with a 12 valve cummins and he gets 20mpg with a c6 if it had a overdrive it would be even better. But with the small bronco like yours a 4bt would fit better its basicly a 4 cylinder version of the 12 valve cummins,With the right mods and trans it might break 30mpg depending driving habits.
