cragar 30 spoke fun!

Hey guys, picked up this set of cragars for 80 bucks on craigslist in pretty rough shape. The guy i bought them from said I should try Oxalic acid on them, so I looked the stuff up and ordered a few pounds off of ebay. The stuff basically will remove rust without scrubbing or damaging the surface around the rust. If its not too deep it will remove the rust with no residue, for the really bad spots you get left with a black pitting...still not that bad though. I left each wheel in a tub for a couple of days and am happy with the results!
As you can imagine, I have dipped about everthing i could find that was rusty. This stuff is awesome, just mix with water and wait.

most of the wheels looked about like this:

the mix starts to change colors after it begins working:

this was the worst spot, and am pretty much left with it this way...still way better than before:

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

The mix even got rid of the hazing that was on the chrome.

here are some pics mounted: 15x10 rears with 275 60 15s and 15x7 fronts with 235 70 15s.
Shes just my old beater junkyard truck so please dont be too hard on me! =)

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

You might want to consider some powder-coating. A little light sandblasting would give 'em a surface that the powder could attach to and you'd be done. Coordinate the colors with your truck or contrast them. There's a silver that is almost chrome-like that may appeal. But, no more rust if you do.

Dang, you slipped another post in right ahead of mine. Look good. But, my suggestion still stands....

Bar Keepers Friend (cleanser) contains Oxalic Acid...just in case someone didn't know.

yeah, not really wanting to throw any more cash at the wheels....the tires were enough! I'm just going to stay ontop of them and try to keep them clean and dry!! thanks!!

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

Look good to me...Two thumbs up!! Should be fine if you keep wax on them, if anything you can spray them with clear.

They look good on the truck and that's not a wheel you see everyday.

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

They look much better. I always wondered what it would look like to brush some silver paint on the spots of rust. It seems that would blend better with the chrome and help keep the rust under control

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

thanks everyone!! I'm really digign them, been getting "thumbs up" too so thats kinda cool. I actually sprayed a tiny bit of clear on the affected areas, you can really only see it if you get up on them.

I also got back into old bicycles lately, that mixture is killer for chains, dropouts, handle bars etc....well worth having it lying around.

Normally not my cup of tea, but I really think they look great with your truck. Sometimes not going with the trend is the best way to go.

Re: cragar 30 spoke fun!

It would be easier to do just the roof.Unless you plan on taking out the front glass.Maybe some one can photo shop both styles for you.
