Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

Figured I'd ask before I buy new and age it

I picked up a nice short bed stepside pickup truck and its' wood is all rotten. Wanting to replace the wood but prefer something aged like the rest of the truck with its' original paint. If you are replacing your bed wood for any 67-72 (I believe really any 60-87?) stepside pickup for new wood and your existing boards aren't rotten, I'm interested. don't throw it away, sell it to me for a reasonable price please...

VA,

If you end up buying new wood, try to find a 84 lumber if you have one in your area. They can order a rustic ceder in standard widths (1x6, 1x8, etc).
The boards are dried and have one smooth side and one rough side with a wonderfull aged look and fill. I just rip and mill them to the correct sizes, and use 3 coats of danish tounge oil and then a good coat of teak oil.

Re: Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

Thanks! good tip! I have one local and used to cover all their va/wv stores as a cabinet rep for one of the companies they purchased from

Hoping to find the used stock wood because it's pre-cut but I have a table saw and router so I can do it if i HAVE to trying to cut down on the work on this thing...

I'm sure there has to be a guy wanting shiny new bed wood who has decent wood out there....probably a bunch of guys on here who've thrown it out or burned the old wood as kindling...

I have some from my fleet side. I'd take $100 for it, plus shipping

Re: Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

I'm pretty sure the fleetside bed wood kit will work on a stepside. I bought a used set of bed wood from a fleetside and have it in my garage for when I get to that point. If you go on GMC Pauls webiste (I think that's where I saw it), he has the dimensions for each application. You might have an extra board, and of course the short boards left over. The board that is cut around the fenderwell is the only one I am concerned about, but it looks like it will work.

Check it out.

Johnthan, I used the Markay template and had a local mill shop plane my oak boards to specification. Cost just under $100 for everything, including the oak wood.

Re: Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

I made my own too, $157 total + my time. (Northern White Oak) GMC Pauls specs, they turned out very nice. Before I paid to ship old wood, I think I'd just have some made up. Maybe do it with the black stuff they used at the factory? It will age nicely for your shop truck.

just sayin, that's what I'd do. It will be expensive to ship due to the lengths.

What I was planning to do, but was hoping I might find someone local with some nice pre-aged and cut wood

Trying to save a Saturday for something else like....putting a drivetrain in it so it can move under its' own power...

I'll just break out the table saw and go to town on some wood when I get to that point.....unless someone local helps me out before then.

Just so it's out there....I was thinkin 40-60 bucks total depending on how nice the wood is since most guys just throw it out...

Still hoping for a cheap local set if not, I've figured it won't cost me more than $60....but a full day's work which I'm trying to avoid

Re: Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

Jonathan, I made my own bed wood out of the goodies from Home Depot. If you need specs, I can post that up for you. All said and done, I think it was less than $100 for materials and just my time

Re: Wanted...used bed wood for stepside

I've been watching here too see what you come up with. and got me thinking
if you really wanted some aged wood try to find somebody in your area that is tearing down a old barn or out building.
I think we both know that buying/milling the wood is no big deal but if its the real patina look your going for this woodbe the way to get it.
I know in the end you'll still have too mill the wood but the strips should cover most of the fresh wood.
i really dont think you''ll be able too find good reuseable bed wood If you do cool but after 40 some years most of them are rotten, around here anyways

another suggestion if its your main goal too have oe bed wood maybe look for a later 80's style stepper the wood might be in better shape but i'm not sure if all the holes/diementions are the same.

whatever you do be carefull of hidden embedded nails/screws they can really put a damper on your productivity
