Did I order correct cam, man and carb?

Im having local machine shop slowly build a 383 for my 78 short C-15. New 5.7in rods Scat rot assbly is in. Hyper dished pistons but dont know est CR. Yesterday I went to Summit for cam pkg, intake and carb. I know just enough to get me in a mess Im finding out, so I went with Summit guys advice on almost everything. Going cheap as I could I ordered Howard Cam HRS-CL 110245-10 Hyd roller. 278/284, 500/510. Comp 17001 roller rockers, 1.5, 3/8. Comp springs 986, Comp retainers 740, Comp valve locks 611, Summit Carb 8750VS (vac second 750cfm) and Weiand Dual plane high rise air gap type manifold. Im using 1.94 worked over Vortecs. $1,435 for above and gaskets etc. Then...I got on line to see if what I ordered made any sense. I feel pretty good about all of it but have to have something to stress on and since I dont understand durations Ill stress over them...Im hoping for 4-425 HP, it will be 99% street driven but I want it to sound mean and go real fast. My big question: are the 278/284 #'s middle of the road or did I go way too high or low? He suggested 2500 stall and expensive fluid balancer. My book learned mechanic ability tells me the stall is ok but do I need expensive balancer? I will REALLY appreciate anyones comments and I have several ques bout how to post on this forum. I love being a part of it but dont know my way around AT ALL. My email is kennyq52@yahoo, hope someone has time to go there and explain this site too me. Would the $149 high rise without air gap style be just as good as the $269 one I ordered? (approx prices) Does my air need to be cooler than anyone elses?

That cam has 225/231 duration @ .050", so its not really radical. It is a healthy cam, and will benefit from a converter. That cam will make really power a Vortec headed 383. You do need to verify what CR your pistons make, but its easy to get CR too high for pump gas with 64cc heads. 2 valve relief flat tops make a smidge over 11 : 1 with 64cc heads.

On a street engine, a high dollar balancer is not really a necessity. I would buy a new balancer, but you really don't need a Fluidampr or anything like. I ran a 383 in my '82 Z28 with a Pro Comp and I ran low 11's on motor and high 10's with 150 shot and never had a problem. It was SFI certified. This is a link to the balancer I used. You do need to know if your 383 crank is internally or externally balancer and buy your balancer and flexplate/flywheel accordingly.

As far as the intake, the Air Gap is nice and does cool the intake charge, especially after the engine has been running a long and everything under the hood is hot. Its honestly not a huge difference though...

Your combo, if properly tuned, will easily make the goal you are shooting for, and probably a little more. Vortec heads flow more air that a lot entry level performance heads. You will have to machine the valve guides to run that much lift on them.

I'd add that you need probably need at least 3.73 gears to take advantage of the camshaft and combination.

Re: Did I order correct cam, man and carb?

Thank you for the replies. Sent back first cam, I ordered Howards #cl110255-12, it has232/236 @.050 with .510/.533 lift. rated for 2,200-5,800rpms. Machinist thought I'd be happier w it and its not too much for the street, and he says no prob working the heads for it all to work. (hes done it before) And I sent back rockers for Pro Form #66915 1.6 self aligning. Im staisfied w the intake and will kep the Summit carb against machinist wishes. He hoped id get Holley 85xxxx something # for $787 but I just couldnt do it. Man, I get worked up and all these #;s and money and reordering and second guessing has about driven me crazy. Wish I would have just let him do it all and not tell me anything so I dont get on computer at night and annalize every little thing and think I should change. Sooo...w luck maybe 4wks till I get it all organized, find a son whose heated gaage I can use and turn the key for first time. thanks again for the several replies. (I hit the paper clip, brose, open a photo and click uploadbut it jusst spins saying"waiting for attachments to be uploaded", but it never happens. And I want photo under Old School Low on left but no luck there either.

To 67 C-30, 373's sound good. Truck seems geared low, maybe I can look at it and figure out what I have. Not posi either but I cant even think about that right now. And going to have to start w half wore out th350 and no stall.

Re: Did I order correct cam, man and carb?

That cam will work better for sure in the 383. You'll want some compression to run strong on the street.

It's similar to my 383. I feel the carb may be too big though, guess you'll know if that's so when you tune.

Gears would be good w 3.73 being my choice and since the engines out I would definetly being replacing the convertor - don't even think about it.

Re: Did I order correct cam, man and carb?

FYI, about those cam ratings, there for 350's not 383's. So they will perform smaller in a bigger engine.

Re: Did I order correct cam, man and carb?

Right for sure. We are making a decision on a different cam for a lot of reasons, and upgrading to Scorpion narrow rockers. You can tell by looking at hood the crappy old paint will buff out pretty good. I'll let u know how it all turns out. TY for the reply
