Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

Greetings all,
Just scored this 2000 Silverado with a knocking 4.8 for a mere 500 bucks.
I have a bit of experience working with older stuff, but just didn't want to get into 40 yr old rust and hours of drama.

Thought this would be a cool build up, plans are to swap out the 4.8 with a used 5.3. I don't know what that entails at the moment, but feel that I can pull it off.

Once running and road worthy, I would like to do a 3/4 drop and add some cooler wheels and tires and use it for daily driving purposes.

I plan to post a detailed list of the drama and upgrades as they take place and hope to get input and advise from other members.

So today I started it 4 the first time since I bought it, the official diagnoses is a cracked flywheel.

So now I have to break it down and see if truly is the sweetest deal ever!

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

have you heard of performancetrucks.net? i would go there and look for things to do as that site caters to this generation of trucks better then most. is this truck a manual? if you do end up pulling the 4.8, i would drop in a 6.0 instead of a 5.3, just make sure you get one with a return style (01-03) intake or reuse the intake from a 4.8. dont get a 99 or 00 6.0 as those have iron heads and a different crank and flexplate which would not work with your tranny

Thanks for the info, the truck is an auto, hopefully I can get some garage time soon to get a look at the flex plate.

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

So in the morning now matter how cold it is, I am finally going to begin the process of changing out the flex plate.

I have caught up on my chores and have been granted a 1 day pass to the garage!

Wish me luck as its sure to be a pain doing it by myself.

Good luck with that Memphis. You are sure to be doing it in the snow tomorrow as it's blowing through here tonight. 2" and counting.

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

Looks like the problem is that the flex plate bolts came loose and 1 broke off. I went to the dealer and got news ones @ 9 bucks a piece, now I just have to figure out how to get the rest of the broken bolt out without dropping the transmission.

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

Are these the torque converter to flex plate bolts or flex plate to crankshaft bolts?

torque converter to flex plate bolts, I have to find a way to drill out the broken bolt without dropping the transmission. Need like a small drill, I started drinkin beer yesterday and gave up working on it.

Overall I was trying to determine if it was the flex plate over a engine swap.

The bolts were backed half way out which leads me to believe that's the problem.

So its looking like my 500 dollar truck just needed 30 dollars worth of bolts to get it up and running.

If I can get the broken bolt out without removing the transmission, that will be an added bonus.

I was thinking of putting some indian head on the new bolts to make sure they dont work their way loose like the old ones did. Anyone have any thoughts on that idea?

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

It's been my experience that when the torque converter bolts are run loose for very long the holes in the flex plate get oblonged so a new flexplate is needed too. That means the tranny has to be moved back or dropped to swap the plate and that will allow you to remove the converter to drill out the broken bolt too. With basic tools you can do the swap in an afternoon.

Re: Project Haggard!, super slow build up thread

Been slow going, got the transmission dropped a few days ago, just ordered rear main seal cover, about to go out now and try to get the broken bolt out of the torque converter and pull the passenger side exhaust manifold to remove another broken bolt.

There was a pretty bad oil leak also, maybe from the rear main, the back of the oil pan also got dinged up pretty good from the loose flex plate bolts, probably going to find a used oil pan and replace that also just to make sure since I have gone this far..
