Bed Covers?
I am looking for an inexpensive fiberglass bed cover (uses struts) for my '72 stepside. Gaylords' seemed pretty expensive - over $800. It's hard to find applications for our years of truck. Maybe, I'll have to go to soft style, but I still like the idea of struts rather then snapped to the bed. Any ideas? I'm trying to save the wood bed finish from heat & water damage. Thanks

Yup, I agree that $800 is a bit much for a bed cover (well, to some of us....)
I ordered this flush hard cover from Checkmate (~$389), picked it up at my local freight office to save a little on shipping, installed it in about an hour. Very easy, so far. Only issue is the seal at the rounded bed front has a 1/8" gap and will leak unless I add more gasket material. I've had it only for about a month, and got caught in a Tstorm and yes, it DID leak. But it's nuthin' that a little extra gasket won't fix. Also, the gasket supplied with the lid leaves black material all over my primered bed rails; I don't know if this happens with REAL paint?

Yours looks great. Does it lock in some way? Thanks for the heads up on leaking. Still better than fully exposed.

i am goin gto make one out of diamand plate. I can get a 4'x8' piece for $110.00 and I am going to build a frame with 1x1 tubing.all I have to figure out is how to seal it up I will use a pianio(spell) hinge and two long through struts. should not be to hard. it is very hard to find a glass for a 8' bed and not pay a grand for it.

I just finished making mine from a factory snap on bed cover(Long Box) I made the frame from the factory steel, and put wood strips on top of them. Then I bent the 4 poles to the new length and bolted them through the wood. Then stretched the vinyl over top, folded it under and stapled it to the wood underside!
The bed has to be pulled back to hinge it to the inner side of the bed! I freek'n blew my mind Man! I t looks great! cost was $10.00 Canadian about 0.10 American Eat my shorts "Gaylords!" $800 American |
