57 GMC Raped Ape

Well after 15 years of buying & selling classic GMs I've finally settled down with a long term project...maybe lol My fiancee loves 55-57 Chevy/GMC's so I saw one across the border. Bought it as soon as we saw it & test drove it.

15 Year Old Hot Rod build that's been in the barn the last 10 years...specs:

Built 350 - supposedly around 500HP but internal specs are unknow. It goes in for a dyno/tune tomorrow. World Sportsman 2 race heads with 1.6 rocker arms and machining. Edlebrock intake & Holley 670 carb. Wild cam, Hooker Super Comp headers into true duals.

Built 350 trans but shift kit & stall are unknow. Need to hook up the Tach still to figure things out.

'68 Camaro 8.5" rearend - gear ratio unknown, need to check it.

Mustang II IFS with discs & coil overs - Heidts or Fatman who knows lol

15" Cragars of course.

Nissan Red paint back whenever. 10ft job but that's OK as it's our driver & it 99% rust free.

Nice dash plate, gauge set, floor shifter, ididit steering column, but that's it for nice interior things. Needs paint & seats, new stereo system and put fuel tank in rear frame. Prob do that this summer.

The Holley 670 was being a pain in the ass this week so after talking to a few people and doing research I decided on a nice Quickfuel BlackDiamond 780 vacuum secondaries carb. Grabbed it today and installed it so it can be tuned tomorrow while on the dyno.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

So today my fiancee takes it to work and tells me the truck was running different & the gas pedal was really loose & it'd drive itself. Knew right away it was the throttle cable but didn't know how bad it was till tonight. Before today the truck was sluggish, unresponsive and running like crap. Did oil, plugs & coil this weekend which helped but still slow, especially for a built 350. I never got time to check the carb or throttle cable, but after today I realized the issue. The throttle cable wasn't opening the carb up enough. Once the throttle cable brace came loose the truck ran like a raped ape. It's alive only because it broke! Good thing it's not a Ford! Only problem was the spring came off to so the carb could be wide open & not close. Could've ended bad if she stomped on it!

So replaced the Holley with the Quickfuel which is a modified tunable Holley body. Also fixed the throttle cable & got it positioned properly. Now we can feel the power this thing has and ohh is it going to be fun racing this summer.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Pure sex right here! We are going to black out the engine as nobody ever does that. The truck will end up a charcoal gray colour one day with blacked out interior, engine bay & bedwood. Only issue today beside throttle cable and carb were the carb plate bolts. They were messed so even though eveything is together I have to it back apart to replace the carb plate & gaskets & clean up some vacuum lines etc. The little stuff is enjoyable so lets hope they don't blow up my engine tomoorow haha Will post up dyno results & race times when the track finally opens up.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Thanks. It's a little big for this engine but I bought it for a future engine build. Finally got it tuned right and dynoed.

At the flywheel it's around 370tq and 330hp. At the tires 280tq around 3500rpm which is perfect range. 250hp at 5000rpm.

Was hoping it'd reach 300tq but no go right now. It's an older build, but solid driver and weekend racer so it'll do for this summer. Next up is replacing a few under hood items to clean it up & fix the rack & pinion leak & redo the interior.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Once we do a few fixes I'll put some more pics up. Nothing fancy about this hot rod build, but we'll make it look decent & more driver friendly at least.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Got a 2nd row seat from an Escalade to fit in. It's full width to the doors and drivers position is off centered so that'll have to be fixed down the road. Now we just need to measure it all up, but I think it'll fit better without the gas tank behind it due to the mounts sticking out.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Passenger side folds down with just enough clearance. Seat sits high also but that'll be good for my fiance since she's only 5' tall.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Test fitting on 18/20 Foose Legends. Feels like we could go 20/22 combo but these will do for this summer.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that. We thought about 20/22 but maybe next year. Only into the 18/20 set for $1000 and just spent a ton on getting this old girl road worthy so gotta watch the bank roll for a bit lol

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Got the tires and rims mounted today. Went with a bigger side wall as it's a daily and we have some bad roads lol

The front will be lowered another 1-2" and the rear will be 3-4" to tuck rim all the way around.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Thanks, we are slowly working on it. Got the back lowered around 2" today. Have enough room for another 2" before needing a c-notch and then it'll be tucking rim. Going to find some longer shackles and toss them on for now to get the rims tucking. Next year we'll most likely bag it or this winter so for now it's just cheap mods here and there.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Finally replaced the Mustang rack and pinion with a new unit that doesn't leak lol Also went up to a 20/22" rim/tire combo on it and it looks that much better!

The '57 was rearended/side swiped the other weekend while it was parked at the beach. Nice date night ended bad of course with the little woman angry that somebody hit the truck and took off. Needs a new taillight, bumper and fender and paint of course. Hopefully get that done fairly soon here, but this past weekend something in the dash fried and now it wont start. Old truck problems haha Going to re-wire the truck and get it going asap provided I have time.

Re: 57 GMC Raped Ape

Thanks. Still hasn't gone into the bodyshop yet, waiting on parts.

So I rewired some stuff & got a new ignition module as the other was fried. Started up once but no power to gauges & can't restart it lol So got a new module for distributor, alternator, coil & American Autowire 13 circuit kit. Let the long weekend fun begin haha Started pulling wires yesterday to see what I was dealing with. Deff needs a full rewire. Hopefully get it done this weekend & make the lil woman happy but we'll see.
