1970 c20 drum to disk alignment question

My 70 c20 is getting disk brakes next week. The doner is a 72 c20.

1. How far can I drive the truck without an alignment?

2. When the alignment is done do I use the alignment spec for a 72 or a 70?

The repair manual I have states that the toe in for 70 should be*
1/8-1/4. For 72 it states exactly 3/16.*

thanks,

paul

When you are done the front suspension will be a 72 so I would go with those specs.
"How far" depends on how far off it is on the eye-ball-o-meter. I have eyeballed some and been so close that taking it to a shop was just a confirmation and been way off on others.

I would gauge on how it feels. In any case: I wouldn't put it off afterwards unless you have a large stock of old tires you want to scrub off.

Thanks for the response. So the alignment should not be so out of wack the the truck is undrivable.

Are you just swapping disc parts over or rebuilding things as well?

If just swapping, keep track of the shim packs & tie rod lengths & put things back in the same positions. That should keep you close for a short, low speed drive.

If rebuilding, things will change but following the same principle should keep things close enough.

Re: 1970 c20 drum to disk alignment question

I took everything from a 72 c20 except the crossmember. Everything! And its all getting cleaned up, painted and worn parts replaced. So from the crossmember out everything will be new or rebuilt. I hired a mechanic to do the rebuild and he and I are going to install the new front end next week. He has done the cpp kit on several trucks in the past.

Will the crossmember need to be altered in any way? Its a 1970 crossmember.

thanks,
paul
